Re: Live at Luther College

Thanks for bringing this thread back - I actually haven't heard any of Live at Luther, but because of this thread - I just went on-line & bought it! RCMH is one of my favorites, so if this is better - wow.

Luther has a more natural sound than RC. Comparing the two is pretty pointless. The thing about Luther is that everything about the release is perfect. Performance, setlist and mix are beautiful.

Surprised no one mentioned Minarets>WWYS and Two Step in this thread. Those are highlights for me along with all the other songs mentioned.

    Re: Live at Luther College

A few years ago I was recording a few of my tunes at this studio. The guy/engineer was a pretty hardcore guy, who mostly liked heavy stuff (music).

When we were mixing my songs, we started talking about acoustic music and he mentioned Luther College. He goes "oh man, that is the best cd...such clean and awesome music". Coming from a headbanging badass, that told me how powerful LLC really is.

This is the cd that truly "hooked" me on DMB.

Anyone with any mixing experience/knowledge know how they got the sound on Luther College to sound so clean? Honestly, LC sounds nothing like other live show to me, the guitars and vocals just come through so clear and soft sounding, it stuns me that sound crews/engineers wouldnt record/mix sets like this for every performance.

It was incredibly well mixed/engineered, but I think more than anything...Dave and Tim sounded that good that night. Not to mention, Dave's voice was pretty incredible from 96-98 (in my opinion.)

Small room, good acoustics, good performance and a great job of mixing it.

The perfect storm of a good cd.

It was that whole tour, Luther probably isn't even the best show of that tour....they were on fire for those shows

I agree with the overall sentiment about LaLC. Amazing set, Dave's voice was virtually perfect. I also loved Tim's presence. Every note he played worked well, his solos always added greatness. One Sweet World, Tripping Billies, Minarets, What Would You Say. I really liked his playing that night. I feel like he overuses the slide/effects in today's shows. Still awesome, but not quite the same.

I do not enjoy RCMH for this reason. Tim over powers many of the songs, and he tends to not fit with the overall feel of a lot of the tracks. Also, the tempo for most of the songs is too slow for me.

Does it not blow anyone else's mind that theres no pictures/video from this show? I mean I know it was early 90's and people couldn't whip out their smart phones and take a picture, but I figured at least some professional photos would have turned up or something.

What can I say, my mind is blown.

they coulda picked a lot of shows from that D&T tour to be the release... the tour was that good. Luther College from top to bottom is absolute fucking perfection. If someone asks me to suggest an album to them if they dont know much Dave Matthews, LC is the first that comes to mind always. No one mentioned Seek Up yet... what an awesome Seek Up... pretty badass Little Thing too, and Christmas Song.

After Alpine '07 (my first DMB show) my good friend sent me home with LC. After billies hit, I was hooked deep. Something just changed inside of me. It's so hard to explain but im sure you all can relate. I went from just "listening" to the music to really, really listening, and feeling....Great, great release!!!

And doubly cool for the fact that I live like an hour or two away from Decorah, IA where it all went down.

Love this release, the setlist is perfect, and so are Dave and Tim. Love the Halloween and Typical but my favorite has got to be the WWYS and the lil jam at the end of it. Also introduced me to Tim's amazing solo performances with Stream. Went out and got a bunch of his solo stuff after I heard this.

Best part of the album if you ask me. Funny to see this thread. I just pulled out Luther this week. It was one of my best early experiences with this music. RR'95 being the first.

Side note: I love Radio City too.

I need to get in on this action. Luther College is in the top 5 releases by the band...

    In no order...

    1. BTCS
    2. Crash
    3. Luther College
    4. RR95
    5. Central Park

Radio City doesn't deserve to be in the same thread as Luther College. Let's just put it that way.
