I really liked the song and I didn't even know it was a cover until after my first listen. Cool that he just recorded it and put it out like that

Also 'the blues stuff' has been gone since like 2010 man it looks like he's sticking with open chord acoustic songs and harmonica a little longer. I really liked born and raised but paradise valley was pretty bland and I really hope he just changes things up completely on his next one. Doesn't need to be blues, just anything else

Just because he did one Beyonce cover doesn't mean Trio plans are off. Don't lose hope yet, my friend!

I still don't understand this idiom..they're the same chords 90% of any artist that has touched a guitar since the 1950's has used, in every genre.

I guess I've just never heard that term before but it applies well enough to JM's music lately I guess

Whether I like what John's doing musically at any particular point (and it's always changing), I appreciate that he does what he wants to do. It's nice to know that I can "trust" him to do what he feels like he wants to do rather than what fans or record companies want.

I'd like more than anything for him to do nothing but JMT stuff for the next little while, but I also appreciate that he won't do it if he's not feeling it.

Something I've always liked about John.

It's just a colloquial term for open (first-position) chords. Basically everything you learn when you first start playing the guitar.

I think John himself said that Born & Raised would feature "cowboy guitar sounds," so that could be where it came from.

Whatever chords he used the last two albums are way worse than the ones he used to use. Hopefully the next album sees less of the bad ones and more of the good ones.

Hmm well if you ask me, the harmonica and melodies he's writing are more responsible for the 'cowboy' sounding songs than basic open chords that everyone uses so I guess that's where I'm confused.

To me, i wish the harmonica would go away more than I wish he'd stop playing 1st position major chords. He's always used them but he would throw in augmented or diminished chords in between to give his songs a more complicated and interesting sound.

to all of this. I mean, look at SDIABR. It's nothing fancy, just C#min, Amaj, and Emaj. Of course, he throws in a few pentatonic embellishments here and there, but it just goes to show that he's capable of writing amazing songs without going all St. Patrick's Day on us.

Edit: I also really dislike the harmonica

Lol @ 'going all st Patricks day'. Unless you play guitar I just don't think you could understand how complicated that song is, cause it doesn't sound crazy to most ears but it has a ridiculous amount of chords in it. I don't think I've ever heard john himself play it live without completely screwing it up

i'm pretty sure that was his argument. he was saying Slow Dancing is a really simple song on guitar, and it's still great. he doesn't need to go crazy on guitar (like St. Patrick's Day) to write a great song.

So true, guys. I remember way back when, getting the Room For Squares songbook, turning to St. Patrick's Day, and almost puking. You know how in most books like that there's like maybe two rows of chord diagrams at the beginning of the sheet music for a given song? Well, for St. Patrick's Day I think pretty much the whole first page of the sheet music is taken up by chord diagrams. And I think maybe like Asus2 is the most simple of them all.

...yes I did. I was agreeing with you. Relax, we'll be ok.

I thought you were laughing at someone saying "going all St. Patrick's Day" because it's so hard, yet someone was making it out to be so simple.
