I prefer the 95 RR version of Proudest Monkey over the studio, and maybe a few others. Not a fan of Stanley Jordan, but saw him at Alpine guest on this song which was pretty cool too...

I feel like some people chose the studio version because it is "crisp/tight", where I would chose a flubbed lyric with an extended intro or outro any day.

Thats easily my favorite Spoon.... With this debate though Id say one or two great live performances dont make it a better "live song" than "studio song".

Spoon is one of the best DMB studio tracks of all time

Proudest Monkey has sucked live since after, I think '96. It's like listening to it in slow motion.

The Crash and '96 versions are OK, but 1995 was when it really had the energy it needed.

There are other songs that are too slow like Jimi Thing.

On the other hand, Grey Street, in addition to losing the third verse, is wayyy to fast. Ditto for DDTW.

But than there's the fact that the instrumentation isn't always as good as the studio versions, or the fact that some songs that fade out on the studio versions (particularly on BTCS) have to actually have an ending live. That's something I've never really loved about any live performance, considering fadeouts sometimes work so well.

    Snow Outside
    If Only
    Crush
Raven (I've not heard heard one where the vocals are spot on compared to studio)
So Much To Say (Piedmont is killer though)

I was on the fence with Squirm. I do love it live, but it's so full sounding in studio with the orchestra behind it. So I could really go either way with it.

Hands of God is just beautifully captured in the studio in my opinion. They haven't quite captured the same intimate effect live, and the extended outro gets to be a bit much for me. Carter just goes off the deep end and brings it to a place I don't think it needs to go. The last two minutes are him thrashing and crashing away and it sounds like crap. The song doesn't call for that kind of playing in my opinion.

So Much to Say just has a fuller sound in the studio to me. I love how Dave's guitar and Carter's drums sound on the recording. This is another that's probably just as good live, but I love how they recorded it in the studio.

Crash is great live, but it was recorded masterfully in the studio. The studio version has so much more going on and is more intimate to me than the live version. The Dixie Chicken outro is cool but I wouldn't say it improves the song to give it a higher status than the studio version.

Pig is another like Crash that is just incredible in the studio. The "Love! Love!" section is way more powerful in the studio with the strings and the multiple vocal tracks. The live version is great, but it doesn't pack as much of a punch as the studio.

I like all these songs live, I just think some were captured better in the studio. They're still great live songs.

Nice to see a positive spin on my negative thread!

I don't prefer it to the live version, but I enjoy the studio version Halloween a lot. The studio version is very tight, and I love how Dave's vocals sound, but I love the raw energy of it live.

Choosing to have Pig fade out on BTCS is probably the only decision I disagreed with Lillywhite on with those first 3 records. It comes to such a satisfying conclusion, I can't for the life of me understand why that was done. Everything else about the studio cut is great though.

I've always liked how it fades out. All the effects on it as it fades has always sounded very cool to me. I have honestly never even thought, "man I wish this didn't fade out". To each their own though. They nail it live.

The production on Squirm and LITHOG in studio are as good as, if not better, than anything on AFTW. Not judging songwriting (though I also prefer both songs to anything on AFTW), but strictly producing the way the band sounds TODAY -- Cavallo hit out of the park with those 2 songs.

The dynamics on BW suck ass. But I agree, there are definitely songs Cavallo knocked out of the park (he knocked Carter out of the park the entire record).

Studio LITHOG is the best we'll ever get 2009+ as far as studio goes.

I think they faded it out because it's a good setup for ASTB/Deed Is Done 'commercial' before Spoon. Pig fades out and I am all relaxed and then BAM!

SMLAM... FTT unless it's Dave solo... WTWE... lots off Everyday actually

Definitely newer rather than older material. Aside from the Big 3 + Busted Stuff, it's the exception for me that I prefer listening to a song live. Notable examples are:
    ABI
    Hello Again
    YMDT
    LITHOG
    Baby Blue

I've not listened to many new concerts so can't comment properly on AFTW...

Hmmm...never thought about it that way and it makes sense. However I'd still say I wouldn't make the decision to fade out a song like Pig which has a great ending to serve a little transition diddy better versus ending Pig the best way (if that makes sense). Good observation though.

Right now I'm listening to 12/14/13 DDTW...it's like some punk group covering the song and destroying it, it's that different!

They slowed it down half a step this year. No more screaming either for the most part. Every version I saw this summer Dave went back to doing the falsetto.
