From what I read it depends on what you're looking to find. I only did Ancestry bc it was on sale. 23 and me seems a bit more complete Stink can probably go into detail
to the Bolded, you can find them at familysearch.org search in the 1930 census.
What I'd do is search last name, and residence (for New York use the borough or county), and range 1930-1930. Then choose US and State and you should be able to locate em

First bold, I thought I read it's better to use the oldest male person to find the most info. I guess yea, we'd obviously have to do my dad's side too through my dad, since his parents are dead, but I could have sworn I read something about men having a better reading or something? I dunno, could have misunderstood.
I guess for that I mean it'd be better to use him as opposed to his daughter (my mom) or his wife.
To the last part, my parents/grandparents have come into the city to look at census records and couldn't find him for some reason. We don't know exactly what year he came, his name may have been spelled different/wrong, or he was just such a poor immigrant shlub nobody gave a shit and he just waltzed off a boat and went to the Lower East Side.
But I am going to send her that link, not sure if she's checked. Thanks!
