Tyler Childers

I think the DMB community is really going to enjoy this guy. Eastern Kentucky (like Sturgill Simpson) born and raised. He is an amazing song writer and can flat wail. I've been a fan of his for a couple of years now. Here are a couple songs that he performed for LR Baggs.

    Purgatory is a great album.

I was bummed I missed him on his last stop here in Pittsburgh. He hasn’t come close at all recently and won’t be for a while according to his tour schedule

Edit: sometimes I wish i lived in Texas. Seems like all of the good country acts play down there constantly. They only come north every now and then.

There's a dude here that's relatively new at work whose name is Tyler that I can't help but chuckle inside every time I see his name or talk to him.

Totally dig some of this dudes songs. Peace of mind and Whitehouse road are probably my favorite of his. Although I didn’t like the studio take of peace of mind, it was too slow. I like the live version so much better. Also ever lovin’ hand is fucking funny. That song is totally about jerking it lol.

I saw his album release show the other week at Webster hall. Guy sounds great live, but doesn't have the stage presence of Sturgill which was a bummer. Still a great show, just expected a little more.

This is a great way to describe him.

I saw him in May and wasn't disappointed but wasn't floored like after seeing Sturgill.

It didn't help that I saw him in the South and it was loaded with redneck bumfucks.

House Fire reminds me of something Dave would play in a country style. Rooted around a D shape with some interesting pulloffs and what not. I don't think Dave has any songs that are drop-D with a capo though. I dig Tyler's playing style.

Do they actually play these guys on country music stations on the radio?

Aside from Stapleton, no. They might on the Sirius channels but every time I've been in the car with my FIL and he's listening to the some local country station it's nothing but bro country.

Pop with twang is what's selling out arenas and stadiums. Everyone else is on the club/theater circuit.

BUT I think what they're doing is leading to something bigger. There's a lot of hip younger kids getting turned on to Sturgill, Isbell, etc. so I think real country will make a bigger return to form some day. If nothing else, these guys will be looked at as icons when they're older. I think they'll fall in line with someone like John Prine who never made it super big (like selling out arenas, stadiums and isn't a household name) but many artists look to them as a huge inspiration and legend.

I think so too. It might not be for a few years, maybe even more but bro country is definitely a bubble that at some point will burst. SOOO much of the same that at some point, people will tire. The red dirt scene has been blowing up in the past 10 years and I think is finally getting some traction.

Love Purgatory. I bought the new album, just havent listened to it yet. Isbell and Stapleton led me down this rabbithole, but I have discovered Tyler, Lukas Nelson, and Sturgill along the way and I cant get enough.

Country radio sucks anymore. I used to listen in a lot. Its all starting to sound the same and they are over-saturating the market (pushing out a meaningless album every 18 months, touring the same mega-ticket acts every summer). I don't mind most "country," I just hate when they glorify being white trash without any storyline/context (ex. rednecker than you, redneck crazy, etc). I also hate when they force wholesomeness or nationalism--like when it doesnt feel genuine, but more of a pandering to a demographic for plays/clicks. It's basically becoming suburban-rural easy listening. I love how the guys in paragraph 1 say what they want to say, when they want to say it, without regard for whether they are getting airtime (they already know they arent getting the spins on the air).

I actually know what song you are taking about. I believe it’s kinda poking fun at the whole state of pop country. That’s how I see it, and its pretty funny when viewed that way.

Probably not, but I couldn't tell you the last time i turned on an FM country station. Isbell is probably too "liberal" for the typical country audience and neither Sturgill nor Tyler Childers reference "back roads" or tractors in their songs enough to get airplay.

The problem I have with mainstream country is that they beat you over the God damn head with whatever story they are telling. Zero imagination needed. Everything is so damn literal.
