if you've never been, you need to bring some beer and hang out around the track (16th and Georgetown) by the Coke lot on Saturday night...it is a freaking party with everybody camping. You'll hear a bunch of "Show me your tiiiiiiiities" and many girls will oblige. Get there early on Sunday, parking is pretty bad. Plan on walking a pretty good distance if you're not camping.

Lots of people bring ear plugs to the race, don't just bring beer, bring plenty of water and food. They are forecasting rain for Sunday, so I would bring an umbrella or poncho, or both in case of a lengthy delay. If it's postponed, they'll race Monday.

other than that, just get ready to cream your pants after the green flag drops because it is, IMO, the best moment in sports. It is unbelievable how fucking fast those guys go. I've been every year for the last 10 years. I start counting down to next year immediately after the race

You're going to have a great time, where are your seats? I'm sitting in the Paddock on the straightaway right by Start/Finish.

oh, and eat a god damn turkey leg from a vendor...also one of my favorite traditions.

    Just FYI

You can not buy beer in Indiana on Sunday. If you are planning on taking beer to the track you must buy in on Saturday!!

(Don't ask, it's a fucking stupid law that soooo fucking old it needs to be removed from the books.)

Also, if you are taking beer, you can't take glass. It needs to be in cans.

I beg to differ. While I've never been to an indy race, I know they don't have too much battling for position. When there is, it is more than likely just 2 cars, sometimes 3 or 4, once in a while 5 in a bunch. But most of the field is stretched out and the middle of the pack is well behind the leader. NASCAR at Daytona would be the best. The cars still run close to 200mph, which is a little slower than the indy cars, but they are constantly in a pack. When they get 2, 3 wide, even 4 wide, going that fast and that close for that long, its amazing. In 1 second 26 cars could go by the start finish line. You can't get that in Indy.

(btw, I've never been to Dayton either, so don't be pullin that "bias" excuse. )

i'm glad you enjoyed it, it truly is an AWESOME event to go to. I think every sports fan should see a race at the IMS, at least once in their lives.

At first I was a little skeptical, because I sort of got dragged along with my dad on his midlife crisis, and I was miserable from the 6 AM until the rolled the cars onto the track. From there on out it was phenomenal, and I'm already planning to make a trip with my friends next summer and enjoying the whole experience.

I couldn't believe how different this race was from the other open wheel race I was at in Cleveland 10 years ago. You couldn't do anything there without someone checking your ticket, telling you your cooler was too big, etc.

The one thing I'll definitely do next year is buy a parking pass for lot 2. My dad is in need of a knee replacement real soon, so he just picked the closest place to park when he ordered the tickets It just happened to be in the middle of the party, and for 20 dollars you can't beat it. We were back on the interstate 30 minutes after the race.

That's where we thought we were going to be, but we ended up clear down by the enterance to Pit Road. The way they sell tickets is weird.

I'd like to see the vid, but I really don't have a preference.

I agree. I was at the Indy 500 last year, and the Daytona 500 this year. Daytona 500 takes the cake, easily.

I am not the biggest racing fan, but I have been to my share of Indy 500s and Brickyards. That being said, racing is a sport that I would MUCH MUCH rather watch from home.

One of the best, IMO. Dodged a lot of bullets the last few years, so this really isn't a surprise. Just glad he walked away relatively unscathed.

INDY gets a little less special every year. I think they'll only be 3 winners in the race next year.

The series is just too dangerous. I always watch the 500, but I never got into this sport because I was afraid of getting to attached to someone that might die. Yes NASCAR also has its risk, but over the last 12 years have had no deaths in the top series thank god. I love Dario and hope he stays involved. I also really liked DW and was crushed when he died at Vegas. To much risk for the Indy cars.
