I prefer having a physical copy by a mile, but the industry is headed in the digital/download/cloud direction.

Yes, that is one of the questions. I hate needing to rely on my internet connection to watch something I own though. Even if streaming ever becomes as high quality as a physical disc, I don't want to have to rely on some company's cloud storage to retain things that I've purchased and I don't want to have to spend $3 or whatever to "rent" a movie every time I want to watch it. I think there will always be a place for physical media. The number of people buying that physical media will decline over time though (it already has).

I will wait for early adopters before switching. Plus I was under the impression that current consoles are not 4K compatible and did not work with 4K TVs.

Yes, you'll need a 4K TV. I don't really know anything about the gaming consoles, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to use a 4K TV. They will only display in the maximum resolution of the console (1080), but they will still be able to use the TV at that resolution.
It sounds like there are things like HDR technology that will be worth waiting to buy a 4K TV. "Mature" 4K TV's are probably still at least 1.5 to 2 years away I'm guessing.
