Other Jam Bands (WSP, SCI, Eggy, Spafford etc) Thread

Instead of creating separate threads for some of these other jam bands, let’s just throw all that chatter in here.

Great idea Baboon! And sorry for stealing your thunder on the Eggy thread, crush!

What type of jamming does a band need to employ to qualify for this thread?

I always think of bands like DMB and Pink Floyd as "bands that jam", as opposed to a Jam Band. As in they have a certain way of extending certain songs on tour, but that way stays the same and is not truly experimented with.

Just thought I'd toss that out there.

Spafford is coming to town in a few months and I think I’m going to catch them. Like a few if their albums but don’t listen to a lot of their live stuff

Yea, agreed. They wouldn’t qualify for this thread haha

They’re great. Would see them anytime they are in town or maybe within a 30-60 min drive.

oh yeah, big fan of this thread!

jamming in the traditional sense is completely improvisational, where-as soloing over something requires form and direction etc...

bands like DMB never really switch up the musical parts of songs, but do solo over existing musical parts, and sometimes for varying lengths of time.

I’d put the Allman Brothers in the same “bands that jam” category.

    Booooo this man!

Jk, I don’t care about thunder stealing. But Eggy def deserves their own thread!

I mean the goddamn Goose thread has 275 pages and they aren’t even the best young, up and coming jam band, from Connecticut!

    (I kid, kind of)

But if we’re talking some of the bands listed anyone got some good recs for early SCI shows? Love me some Cheese and have spent various times listening to a lot of SCI but mostly latter half of career stuff. Need to explore some earlier stuff a little deeper.

Completely fair, it’s all a spectrum. I certainly wouldn’t consider DMB a jam band, and I suspect they wouldn’t fancy themselves of that ilk either, but DMB is definitely a “gateway jamband”. And as critical as I am about modern DMB (which lets be honest, is probably compeltely fair), I do think they deserve credit getting a lot of people into jam band music as the kind of “first step”.

Agreed. For years Ive called a select few bands liek Allmans and WSP “southern jam rock”. Not quite a jam band, but more than a traditional rock band.

I’ve always personally described Allman Brothers Band as a blues/jazz/rock/country fusion band.

Or as Tom Dowd described them in 1970: “ rock 'n' roll band playing blues in the jazz vernacular”.

Got to see ABB 3x before Gregg passed. They were actually my first show (paired with Lynyrd Skynyrd). I remember hating the first show because they jammed so much and refused to play "Ramblin' Man." Thankfully I had two more chances to rectify that. My last time seeing them I was front row on the rail right in front of Gregg. Magical evening.

I only got to see them once, it was at the beacon during their final run. Awesome.

Saw Dickey in Staten Island a few years later, super rusty but fun to be able to see him.

My friend's band Squeaky Feet out of Denver is awesome and only getting better. First album will be out in a couple months and they've gained a solid local following. Hopefully they'll continue to come up in the next year or two. They've opened for Spafford, Dopapod, Lespecial & RAQ in the last year or so. Super proggy compositions and incredibly diverse and deep jamming. Big time Umphrey's influence to their sound but they get way out there with their improv, more so than almost any band on the scene rn. The keyboard player also pulls out the sax and flute for jams on occasion which is sweet. So if that's your thing I'd highly recommend checking them out. All recent shows are on Nugs. Here's their opening set for Spafford last fall on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPzK...el=SqueakyFeet

I used to love the Wanee festival. It was my yearly (or every other year) Allman’s shows.

    Does Liquid Tension Experiment count?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Haaf...JpbWVudA%3D%3D

Prog/sometimes metal vibe… all jams. Tony Levin has a ridiculous resume but this is where he really shows off his massive talent.

I actually like Mihali’s vocals, except when he gets into that emo reggae stuff. I really like Zdenek Gubb and Ryan Dempsey.

I was thinking they’d do some southeast shows at some point on their farewell year but looking more and more like that won’t happen.

Preparing to interview Rob Houk of TAND (formerly of Aqueous) and I just gotta say TAND rips. Their show in NY from last week is pretty phenomenal. LIstening to it on Bandcamp. These dudes deserve more light.

I have tried giving Tand a chance and absolutely nothing I have heard has stood out in any way. All very generic jam band blah stuff. If you have recs id be interested in looking for more.

Been listening to Grateful Shred a bit, those guys are good.

The two main guys are part of a group called Mapache. I interviewed them a few weeks ago and before we started I brought it up and they shot it down real fast and said the project was done. Seemed to even get a little frustrated I brought it up.
