Re: antsmarching.org Away From The World Review

I keep falling more and more in love with this album. It's a matter of getting past that initial period where you've got your preconceived notions of what DMB should be, and letting the *actual* vibe of the album hit true. But more and more I feel it's a stroke of genius that they released this now, in the fall. The tone is perfect. Big Whiskey was definitely a summertime album, it was lush and bombastic. This one shows its bones a little more, it's got warmth but it's not sweltering. It gusts and calms by turns. And god, the melodies! It's just beautiful.

All of the big 3, dave and tim, and AFTW fit perfectly with the fall season IMO.

I never thought of this before -- what a fascinating way to think of an album. I don't want to derail this thread but I would love to see how people categorize all the albums this way...

    UTTAD - Spring
    Crash - Summer/Fall
    BTCS - Fall/Winter
    tLWS/BS - Fall
    ED - *
    SU - *
    BW - Summer
    AFTW - Fall

    * - I really have a hard time characterizing these because I have a difficult time getting into the music at all.

I remember clicking with it in October. Not sure what it is, but the sound of it--yeah, definitely a cold weather kind of record.

For me, DMB was *always* a summertime band. The only one of their albums that I associated with a different time of year was Red Rocks, that one always made me think of Christmas. But Some Devil was definitely autumn/winter for me, and I think this new album goes along with that.

It's really, REALLY subjective and hard to explain why it makes me feel that way, but it does. But I've always been very tied to the seasons when it comes to my imagination.
