It's not just about being accessible, though. It's two completely different levels of reading you can do in the same series. The reading level and comprehension you need to grasp the power/emotion behind a number of character monologues or relationships was absolutely much higher than even your above average YA book.
I mean, it obviously was not written for hardcore fantasy buffs who love chapters of whatever created world's history and lineage and wasn't as explicit as legitimate adult books, but a lot of that stuff was still in there, you just had to read into it. I still think calling anything from book 4 on children's is incorrect. You want violence and death? There's plenty including not shying away from killing off a number of lovable characters. You want gratuitous sex and rape? Again, it's not explicit but it's in there, just 'hidden' for people who are on top of things.
