Purely conjecture at this point -- and the chances of landing him for what's now expected to be a 4 film adaptation seem somewhat remote to me because of the time commitment -- but Matthew McMonaughey is being targeted to play Randall Flagg in The Stand.

I still remember the made for TV version of the Stand which was pretty good. As I recall it had some Gary Sinese, an A-list actor at the time, and a couple of B-listers. Remakes, remakes everywhere. The quote I took with me from that movie is "We are dead and this is hell." I think trying to get the story in during a single 2 to 3 hour movie is going to be hard without cutting out significant portions.

    I love the mini-series.

As to the bold, it looks like they're doing four full movies.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

to be fair, when's the last time you guys actually had a rewatch of the 90's version of The Stand? I'm not saying everybody, but I can't help but feeling like some who haven't looked at it in a long time are doing so with some rose colored glasses on. I watched the whole thing when I noticed it was on netflix a little less than 2 years ago, and actually it's the perfect sort of thing for a remake, because obviously the book is a modern classic but there is a LOT of room for improvement in an adaptation. It looks extremely dated, and there is no shortage of highly cornball both writing and acting. However, now seeing that they're perfectly willing to devote much more than just one 3 hour(ish) feature film to it, I say go ahead and HBO it, a hard R, single run 10 episode series. Just like Game Of Thrones, have each episode be just about an hour long. You can even just cut it to 8 episodes if you'd think that may be too much (never read the book, so...)

Oh there's certainly plenty of room for improvement. TV wasn't what it is now back then. You had to cheese it up a bit. I still love it though, but perhaps part of that is nostalgia.

I would absolutely LOVE an HBO 10 episode mini-series of it. Been saying the same thing about Dark Tower for years.

I really need to read The Stand. In fact, I don't think I've read anything by Stephen King, except for maybe a random short story.

The Stand is arguably his best work (probably #2 for me... maybe #3). Be forewarned though, it's long as fuck.

I (or someone in the King thread) could recommend one of his shorter works to start with, to get a feel for whether or not you like his style and would enjoy something as long as The Stand.

Though, The Stand was the first book I ever read of his, so obviously I won't say it's a bad place to start considering the level of fan I became.

even in the book does it wind up boiling down to just a straight up god vs the devil kind of thing? like in the miniseries, where you had Larry (who btw Damon Lindelof has since said was a major inspiration for the Charlie character in Lost) and the other guy literally reciting the lord's prayer as loud as they could when they were tied up to those poles or whatever they were in Vegas

The Stand is the bomb.com. Would love Matthew's idea for a 10 part HBO miniseries.

Showed my dad the trailer for Jurassic World. He got all stoked and wanted to watch the first three again. His wife had seen the original but not Lost World so we're watching that.

I don't get the hate for this one. It's not as good as the first, but I really like it.

edit: Except for the last bit in the city. That was fucking retarded.

Now he wants to watch The Edge because Lost World made him think of it.

I tried to get them to watch something they hadn't seen before (suggested Prisoners) but got vetoed.

Crude synopsis but the kid was truly remarkable and his story was really compelling.

I'd certainly be willing to give The Stand a shot and was already pretty familiar with how long it is. I think it's my mom's favorite book, certainly her favorite of King's, and she and I have pretty compatible tastes when it comes to books. So yeah, I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with starting something that long.
