Primus / Les Claypool Appreciation Thread

Primus is one of the most unique alternative rock bands out there. I never thought much about them until six years ago when my friend started playing some of Les Claypool's awesome guitar riffs. Since then, I try to get my hands on whatever music of theirs I can find. I don't think all of their music is gold, in fact a good amount of it is pretty bad, but they have a lot of kick ass albums.

I'm probably not the best person to start a thread like this, but I was curious on other people's thoughts. I also have never seen them live so I would love to hear what some people's experiences have been (I've seen their live DVD's though).

Feel free to discuss Claypool's other projects as well.

great band and Les is a one of kind musician...

I really enjoy all of Claypool's bands especially Oysterhead...

Tho, his new album is pretty underwhelming imo

That was Les Claypool Frog Brigade actually.

Sorry, Some of you guys are DMB crazyassfans. I'm a Les Claypool crazyassfan. I have every album that man ever made (that I can find at least).
    Which includes:
    Sausage
Primus-all studio albums and a few live shows (not nearly as many as DMB has)
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains
    LC and The Holy Mackerel
    LC's Frog Brigade-3 albums I think...
    Oysterhead
not to mention both new solo albums (Of Whales and Woe, Of Fungus and Foe)
I've also got a few appearances with Tom Waits.
He produces a bunch of artists stuff too and I wanna get those.

I love this man's work. Something about it just speaks to me.

Nice to hear. I'm assuming you've been to some shows. Which band, how were the experiences, favorite project to see live?

I got into Primus right after they released Animals Should Not Act Like People when I was like 16 or something. I don't live anywhere near a big city so I've never had a chance to see him with any band. Also, he plays 21+ clubs when he comes anywhere near me; I'm 20...
I've had the chance to see him like 3-4 times, but I'm not 21. It blows...

It's the same problem with musicians like Victor Wooten too. He only plays clubs.
I suppose It's so dumbass teenagers don't run amuck, which I totally support.

Primus is ok, I have some random songs. I think his work outside of Primus is awesome though. Started with Oysterhead, then moved too Les Claypool Frog Brigade. Both live albums are amazing. The only problem I have with Frog Set 2 is I am such a huge fan of Animals to begin with, I just don't think anything can compare to it. In and of itself though, it is still a great album. Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains is also a fun album to listen too, especially since it has Buckethead on it.

It was during these early years that the catch phrase "Primus Sucks" started. It began with people constantly stating to the band just how good they were. One day when someone told the band they were good, Claypool turned around and said "No, we suck" and from then on it stuck.
    1. Primus sucks
It is the band Primus' slogan, meaning that you would say it if you really like primus. they got sick of the slogan after awhile but some people still say it because it's a great slogan, so if you see someone post a comment on a youtube video of primus and they say primus sucks give them an E-high five.

I stand corrected. Like I said before, I've only been a fan for about 6 years now, but I do recall over that span seeing comments and merch with that slogan and never quite understood. Thanks for clearing that up, makes a lot more sense now.

In the same manner, I loved Ben Folds' tour shirt he had a few years ago that said, "I Love('d) Ben Folds (Before He Sucked)"

not to rag on ya, but I've never understood why people only buy a few songs/essential songs. Yeah, not all of them are gonna be good, but at least you've got the whole album.
I'm kind of an elitist that way, I guess...

    that being said...

    What's everyone's favorite Primus album?
    What's everyone's favorite side-project?

I can never get enough of Primus' Brown Album. It's groovy.

And I'd like to see some more music come out of Oysterhead. Stewart Copeland and Trey A with Les is like a trifecta of musical genius that needs to produce more music.
But Claypool's 2006 solo album "Of Whales and Woe" is my favorite non-Primus work.

not to rag on ya, but I've never understood why people only buy a few songs/essential songs. Yeah, not all of them are gonna be good, but at least you've got the whole album.
I'm kind of an elitist that way, I guess...
    no you're right

initially I just downloaded a random collection of songs to see if I would dig them
but it's long overdue I get the rest of their music

    that being said...

For some reason I have never thought much of the Brown Album so I haven't listened to it much (maybe 3 or 4 times). I guess I just was more fixated on their earlier albums with more of their "hits", so to speak. Upon you saying this though I decided to give it a good listen again (as in right now) and I see what you mean. It is really groovy and fun to listen to. No real outstanding hits IMO but it is an altogether good album.

I still think my favorite album is Fizzle Fry though. Too much awesomeness in there.

Each album is so different that I have to be in the mood to listen to any particular one. I love Frizzle Fry all through Tales From the Punchbowl, but Brown Album tends to hit the spot more often than not. They got a new drummer and it feels different because of it. Also the mixing feels much different.
I love listening to the evolution of bands especially Primus. Each album feels unique.

Frizzle Fry is by far my favorite Primus album. Never got into Les' other projects though. Anyone else going to Gathering of the Vibes in CT this summer? Primus is headlining.

edit. my bad...didn't see someone already mentioned it
