I've asked myself, though... how much of this aura of greatness in my memory stems from who I was, and what the times were like, back when I first heard UTTAD and R2T and Crash? With every passing year that world and what made sense in it gets a little further away, replaced by what life is like *right now*. When I listen to Big Whiskey, it fits the present for me. I can't imagine UTTAD appearing today for the first time, its aesthetic is so thoroughly the 1990's.
Anyway, not disagreeing exactly--I know DMB is making more pop-rock than art-rock these days, though it's still infinitely more artistic than most of the imitation garbage being peddled in the popular marketplace. But unless there's big cultural swing back towards esoteric, delicate, intellectual world-music (and hell, was there ever, really?) I am not expecting another UTTAD or Crash to appear. I'm just happy DMB is making big, ballsy music with excellent musicianship and tangible energy.
