Listening to one instrument at a time

Someone on here said they were having troubles getting into Seven, and wondered what they were missing. I don't know if this a direct answer to that necessarily, but it made me think about how I listen to DMB songs. I almost always kind of just take a song in as a whole, let it do what it's gonna do to me. After sometime, and I don't plan it, I will hear a certain chord or note from a particular instrument that didn't jump out at me earlier. I will then proceed to listen to the entire song from the perspective of that one instrument, or I will listen to the song and kind of jump around from instrument to instrument. I don't know how that affects others, but this almost always changes songs for me....changes how they strike me. I guess my point is, if someone is having difficulties getting into any particular song, maybe try this and see what happens. Anyway....my humble two cents. Take care all

when i got my friend into DMB, at first she didnt really get it whenever she listened to a song. then i told her to listen to the instruments on their own and then put them together. then she finally saw what was so amazing. she told me that now whenever she hears a new song, she listens to it several times and listens to different parts each time before putting it together. i do it all the time too. you discover so many more levels to songs when you can listen to instruments individually.

this is a great way to listen to music, but you gotta remember to listen to each instrument WITH RESPECT TO THE WHOLE. if you really put the pieces together instead of just admiring each piece, thats when you will have the greatest appreciation

I approve this thread. I love listening to music like this, especially DMB, because the guys are musicians. Sometimes what I do is I will sing the lyrics to myself but to the music of another instrument, usually bass or violin. Doing this makes some fun vocals, and by doing it, you can hear more explicitly what the instrument is doing.

I did this yesterday with Seven. It is my favorite song on the album right now, and everyone has been going nutso about Carter in the song. I had noticed that as always he was kicking ass, but yesterday I just listened to the drum part exclusively...and my mind was blown. Especially listen to how seamlessly Carter makes the transitions in that song.

great thread. It's really interesting how the ears can work. if you just sit there and listen without focusing you may not even notice an instrument or what the notes are the instrument is playing. but then when you focus only on that instrument, it suddenly jumps out in the mix, at least that is how you perceive it. and then all of a sudden that instrument is driving that song on that listen. keeps things interesting for sure. i think we do this often without even realizing it. This is what separates good, lasting music from catchy songs that have simple guitar chords and nothing else to it. I listen to a lot of that type of music to be honest. I'll LOVE a cd when i first hear it and then I can't listen again a month later. DMB I have been listening to nonstop for 6 years and this is why they'll always be my favorite band

I find that it helps to listen to cd's on different types of audio devices (headphones, computer speakers, car stereo, stereo). Each device will enhance different tones and thats how I can pick up on some of the more subtle sounds in each song

I think everyone (who really likes music, anyway) does this. The first few listens of So Damn Lucky on Some Devil, I honed in Tim's guitar part. I always thought the repeated riff at the tail end of the song would be great basis for an extended jam ... and now they do it! Caught both shows this spring in Vegas, and version of So Damn Lucky (N1) was astounding. Tim adds so much depth to band and the arrangements. Particularly N1 seemed at times like the TR show featuring DMB. Not that I'm complaining. He's incredible! ... I guess I wandered off topic there!

This is a really, really great topic. I always remember I asked my friend one time "When you listen to this song, what do you listen to?" She had no idea what I was talking about. Because I'm a musician, I "listen" to music differently, and sometimes I wish I didn't.

I think it's best to listen to songs as a whole, but like the OP said, sometimes you can discover totally different parts when you listen from one instrument's perspective. That's just the great thing about music. Listen to only the drums, then listen to only the lyrics, then only the bass, etc. You can discover new things after hearing songs for years.

Roi's riffs that Dave and Carter loved so much are actually there...when I actually complained about there absence earlier.

Best to listen close to all of these songs.

I was actually saying this to my wife the otehr day in reference to Stefan's bass line in Spaceman. You hear "the song" and then all of a sudden on one listen, you tune into one instrument you never heard and the song becomes new again.

I think that is the reason why DMB music has such staying power. You can pick up an old song and hear new things even if you've heard it 200 times.

this is how I listen as well...and why BWGGK has grown on me immensely in the last few weeks.

my love for spaceman was renewed by the bass, a complete new appreciation for seven after hearing horns then AGAIN after really tuning into timmy's jam during the second half, truly love it.

i think each song has hidden gems, you just have to chill out, enjoy each one with a good pair of headphones and try to appreciate the music for what it is...this band has more members than your average group, so the songs are rich, lots of lines, lots of riffs.

this is best to do when you're high. you can really focus on only one instrument at a time. i did this last night with Big Whiskey. Carter is fucking brilliant. he's a fucking storyteller with those drums.

Couldn't agree more. Just last weekend my friend and I were watching Central Park (now i can't remember what song) but all of a sudden Roi played this phenomenal little 5 note piece and he and i both jumped up and went WHOA. funny that it hit both of us at the same time and have been dmb fans for eons.

and as for ^ yes, its significantly easier to do when high.

SOLID THREAD, it's hard to listen to anyone other than CARTER but, I agree that each musician brings a different song to the whole piece. I feel like I'm always trying to explain this to non-fans, but they're losing out. Their interactions with each other live are phenomenal as well. Listen to Carter and Fonz on SEVEN, well not just seven but all of em, those two stay tight.

http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/...ten/b10ch4.htm - if you subscribe to the notion that music is it's own language (which you should, musicians ), read that and try to apply it to listening to music. Pretty fascinating.

Like someone said before, having talented musicians who are positively contributing to the music is what gives DMB their staying power. Really, it's the only thing that separates their (pop) music from everything else on the radio.

On the topic of critically listening to BWGGK, LITHOG is a dearth of different layers, from both Tim and Dave. Dave's harmonies on the chorus are perfect, and the three or four guitar tracks Tim laid down create such a great atmosphere. Thankfully, this album is growing on me (and not the opposite )

It really is insane. I listened to it exclusively after Dave mentioned something about it.
