Fall/Winter 1998 Tour Appreciation

So I'm at work wanting to get some music goin, and all of my 1998 collection came up, and the fall tour started playing, and each song just sounds amazing. The jams, the extended outros/intros (Seek Up, Heartbeat Jam, OSW, etc) are just phenomenal. The setlists were insanely good, and hell, even a LT and LiC came out of it. So take a look at this...

http://dmbalmanac.com/TourSongInfo.a...=22&where=1998

Just some amazing songs and stats there... especially this...

Remember when Dreaming Tree was a rarity? It was only played twice on this tour. Love it. Other songs worth noting only getting 1 play:

STJL
OSW
True Reflections
Granny
Spoon
a few jams

Interestingly enough, BCTS and Crash had almost the same amount of plays throughout this tour (177 and 172, respectively).

5 longest songs of the tour:

1.) #41 - 27:28
2.) Two Step - 20:16
3.) Seek Up - 19:18
4.) Last Stop - 18:31
5.) LIOG - 18:28

5 shortest songs of the tour (not including segues/jams):

1.) Recently - 3:07 ---->
2.) STJL - 4:03
3.) So Much To Say - 4:11
4.) Granny - 4:11
5.) Too Much - 4:14

Opened with Seek up 9 times, closed with Trippin Billies 12 times. I would take either one or both of those any day of the week now a days in a normal set!

Rarest setlist (acc'd to the Almanac):

Dave Matthews Band
December 1, 1998
First Union Center, Philadelphia, PA

Seek Up »
Heartbeat Intro »
Pantala Naga Pampa »
Rapunzel
So Much to Say »
Anyone Seen the Bridge »
Too Much
Don't Drink the Water
Proudest Monkey
Help Myself
#41
Drive In Drive Out
Crush
True Reflections
Two Step
Tripping Billies
-----------------------------------
Lover Lay Down
Stefan solo »
All Along the Watchtower

The least rarest set (acc'd to the Almanac):

Dave Matthews Band
November 2, 1998
Boise State University Pavilion (Boise State University), Boise, ID

Seek Up
Heartbeat Intro »
Pantala Naga Pampa »
Rapunzel
Crash Into Me
Don't Drink the Water
Minarets
Crush
Lie in Our Graves
Stay (Wasting Time)
Jimi Thing
Two Step
Tripping Billies
-----------------------------------
I'll Back You Up
Too Much

For the record, I would take this least rarest setlist ANYDAY.

So just thought I would throw some stats and figures out there for you. What a tour!!!!!!!

Sadly, I never attended a '98 show, but I appreciate the hell out of the band during this era.

I attended my first two shows on this tour, and it sucks to say, but I dont remember really appreciating them that much, because it was my first stint with the band. But hell, if I could go back and relive it, that would be amazing.

I have a hard time deciding what my favorite show is from that tour.

So many good ones to choose from

    10/30, 11/30, 12/01, 12/03, 12/07, 12/08, 12/19...

Also, check out Satellite from LT Vol. 1 - 12.8.98... and listen at the 3:16 mark until the 3:40 mark.... crazy guitar work by Dave, and not your typical segue into the next verse. Amazing.

1998 was great in general. They killed it.

This was my favorite shows from the Florida Run that year (also the show Carter gave me the drum sticks he used on stage after the show out back, all chewed up from the hi hat and cymbals)

I'm gonna say that this 'Fall Tour' will have much the same success...with the recent amazing sets, its only to get stronger before they end touring for 2010.

I mean, if you take some of the stronger songs that have been played once, or a handful of times this tour, such as:

    Minarets
    Say Goodbye
    Lover Lay Down
    The Last Stop
    Pig
    Halloween
    The Stone
    Warehouse
    Seek Up
    Best of What's Around

and I also think DIDO will rear it's head.

...and then we'll most likely get Christmas song a few times, etc...

Maybe not AS strong, but I feel like their winter shows are always stronger than the summer one's.

    that's pretty different, though.

and with the exception of 2005 (and maybe 2002), i generally agree with the bolded

although one could argue that since winter 2005 was shorter than summer 2005, it was therefore a better tour

I agree with this as well. I feel as though Winter tours seem to be more of an "intimate" setting, with smaller venues, smaller crowds, more excitement. At least from what I have noticed in the past.

I've been to 60 shows, and believe me, I could put a laundry list together of what kind of crap I have seen at shows. At maybe about 1 or 2 of those shows did I see anything like that. So, again, true statement.

This was my first show as well. My best friend and I had been on the outs for about 3 years. Calls me up one day to catch up and what not. Throws out the idea of driving to Milwaukee, 20ish hour drive as we are both east coasters. Was hooked right away, so much so that we drove down to the U of Illinois the following day to catch them again. 1998 was a great start to my dmb touring career which of course continues to this day.

Funny side note: We arrived at the Bradley Center approx. 6am. Short nap in car. My buddy goes inside to find a restroom. He notices a line of people for one of the ticket windows. Thinking these people are waiting to snag some last second seats for the show that evening, he stands there for about 15 minutes. Finally he asks someone if this is the line for dMb tickets to which he gets the reply "nope, this is for Celine Dion." DOH!!! Walks over to the only other open window and proceeds to get 5th row tickets. A most excellent introduction to DMB I must say.

IMO, late 98 is the best they have ever done.....00 and 02 were great, but my heart is with 98....it can't be touched

1998 is for me by far and away their best tour year. Trounces 2000, IMO.

One of these years they are going to do a warehouse only show.

It's either going to be a great crowd- or half of the crowd will be shitty which will have the benefit of that many people getting booted out of the warehouse for scalping.
