Deeply saddened reading the news of his passing (coincidentally saw it first on @vi_shawnieross' IG)... I share the same birthday (albeit 17 years later) with CC and he has been a profound musical influence with his soulful and bluesy melodies, poetic writing and otherworldly voice. An unforgettable talent that has graciously lent us his voice and performances that can truly unearth a variety of emotions in any setting. Music has lost a legendary songwriter and musician, perhaps the quintessential voice of rock. I've included some, IMO, tracks that showcase his amazing talent.

the entire Euphoria Morning recording is a timeless album... absolutely a classic record, front to back.
TOTD: Reach Down, Call Me a Dog, Times of Trouble, All Night Thing
SG: Like Suicide, Slaves/Bulldozers, Rusty Cage, Blow Up the Outside World, My Wave, Pretty Noose, Burden in My Hand, Outshined, Day I Tried to Live, 4th of July...
Covers: Thank You (Zeppelin), These Times Are A'Changin (Dylan rework), Nothing Compares (Prince), Billie Jean (MJ), A Day in the Life (Beatles), Redemption Song (Marley)... etc.
Solo work: Seasons, Sunshower, As Hope and Promise Fade (written originally by John Mayer as 'Two Drink Minimum'), Nearly Forgot my Broken Heart, Worried Moon, Higher Truth...
AS: Wide Awake, Set it Off, Like a Stone, I Am the Highway, Revelations, Cochise, Show Me How to Live, Doesn't Remind Me...

Footnote: Always thought and would've looked forward to hear a collab between Dave Matthews and Chris Cornell as solo artists-- thought it would be interesting

Along with DMB, the grunge bands of the early 90s are my all time favorites with Soundgarden and Alice in Chains at the top of my list. Devastating news today. I wish Chris could have gotten help.

    For sure.

Whenever you listened to him talk it really did sound like he finally kicked his demons. Apparently not.

This is what I keep coming back to today. It seemed like he was past shit. I feel lucky I got to see Temple of the Dog last year, but I hate that it's now the last show they'll ever play.

Dude. Suicide? That's so sad. Makes this whole thing even more sad.

I will say when I saw him not two weeks ago he said a lot of really pessimistic things. I remember during the show thinking "wow, he's kinda cynical." But also chocked it up to just a cynical mentality and I mean he's the definition of the grunge movement, a movement that could be classified by it's cynicism and reality.

This has really bummed me out all morning. Haven't had a celebrity death bother me like this since Bowie and before that I don't think it had ever happened to this degree. Kinda weird how we get attached to these figures when we don't even known them and for the most part have probably even never met them.

I've been listening to his solo stuff all day today at work. I really enjoy Higher Truth, I'm mad I never listened to this before. So happy I got to see Soundgarden here in Boston in 2013. The setlist was incredible.

I feel fortunate I got to see him five different times: Thrice with Soundgarden, once with Audioslave and one solo acoustic show.

I basically saw him do the Temple of the Dog thing, too, if only for one song. He came out to sing Hunger Strike with Pearl Jam.

Know a guy who saw him come out at Alpine for the PJ 20 tour to sing Hunger Strike. Said it was one of the coolest moments ever.

    That must've been awesome.

I saw it at the Bridge School Benefit in 2014. I kind of expected it since Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were on the bill, but it was still pretty neat.

Ugh. I can't believe that the dude who sang Outshined is dead.

I recall Cornell putting out a rather coy sounding tweet back then, the day of the show. I mean, to those who were already heavily invested in the event, it was pretty obvious to what he was referring, but it was something like "plane just landed in Wisconsin... anything cool or interesting to do around here?"

The more I thought about all this today while at work and really let it sink in, and particularly now we have confirmation it was suicide, with my own depression history that I've had, I do understand how it ultimately seems such a thing would be possible. Just in that, how I was even reacting myself initially this morning, that "they just played a whole show last night, he sent an enthusiastic tweet out about it!" That how, even when you at any given time could be "happy" or doing relatively okay, still in less than a 24 hour period later (hell in this case under 12) you could make the decision 'alright this is the moment I'm doing this'. When you have the basis of it there existing in your system already, how quickly it could suddenly all overwhelm you enough to take that step.

though the primary thing I keep coming back to, that he picked as painful of a way that is to do it. Sure there are even more agonizing methods, but there are also quicker, less painful ones. But putting that together with some of the quotes from his between-song-banter last night, I wonder if he wasn't feeling a tremendous sense of guilt over hurting or disappointing someone very close to himself lately.

Interesting read. Sounds like a lot of the banter he said last night was the same banter he was using in Memphis. This show doesn't sound too far off from what I saw.

it's not the prettiest cover but considering they probably never played it before, that's a nice tribute to play a song for him.

The last song from the show in Detroit last night. Skip to 6:36 to hear where he cuts into "In My Time Of Dying" by Bob Dylan/Led Zeppelin.

In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home

Well, well, well, so I can die easy [x2]
    Jesus, going to make up

Jesus, going to make up my dying bed
    Meet me, Jesus, meet me
Meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, Lord
Please meet me with another pair

Well, well, well, so I can die easy [x2]
    Jesus, going to make up

    Somebody, somebody
    Jesus going to make up
Jesus going to make you my dying bed
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
    Jesus, going to make up
    Somebody, somebody
    Jesus going to make up
Jesus going to make you my dying bed

Oh, Saint Peter, at the gates of heaven
    Won't you let me in
    I never did no harm
    I never did no wrong
Oh, Gabriel, let me blow your horn, let me blow your horn
Oh, I never did, did no harm
I've only been this young once
I never thought I'd do anybody no wrong
    No, not once
Oh, I did somebody some good
    Somebody some good
    Oh, did somebody some good
I must have did somebody some good
    Oh, I believe I did
    I see the smiling faces
I know I must have left some traces
And I see them in the streets
And I see them in the field
And I hear them shouting under my feet
And I know it's got to be real
    Oh, Lord, deliver me
    All the wrong I've done
    You can deliver me, Lord
I only wanted to have some fun
Hear the angels marching, hear them marching, hear them marching
    Hear them marching, the' marching

Oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus [x3]
Oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus
    It's pretty good up here
Oh Georgina, oh Georgina, oh Georgina, oh Georgina
    Oh I'll see you again
Oh, don't you make it my dying, dying, dying

    That's a haunting swan song.

I'd never heard either of those before. and I do like the Prince cover (although only did discover within the last year that wasn't Sinead's song), but the Fell On Black Days... holy mother of god. adding that cello in, it's genuinely like it qualifies it to be a completely different song, and it's chilling.

it's not the prettiest cover but considering they probably never played it before, that's a nice tribute to play a song for him.
I'm not exactly familiar with Megadeth's material, but I'm kinda assuming what that guy in the crowd was shouting was one of the band's more popular titles? I mean how can you be a fan enough of the band to be there in the first place at all, then stupid enough to think that's a good time to do a "Freebird!" moment?
