They fucked up the story majorly and had to cut out a lot of depth in order to fit it into one movie.

If you all want to really geek out on HP, listen to the Dear Mr. Potter podcast. Episodes for the third book should be coming out soon.

Listening to the first episode now. Is it only the one guy talking the whole time? I like the analysis, but would be nice to have another voice.

    Just the one guy.

He's also done all of the SW movies, and is currently working through Lord of the Rings.

Movies were great in my opinion....paled in comparison to the books but definitely served their purpose.

Also not sure what extra was needed from the 6th movie....that was by far my least favorite book. Other than the ending I felt like nothing really happened.

Side note: New Expansion announced for 2019 at Universal Studios Florida....New Family style coaster to take the area where Dueling Dragons was.

Also they are currently polling people for a Potter themed/immersive hotel....SIGN ME UP!

Thinking about reading the entire series soon. Haven't read any of them since the last book came out (whatever year that was).

Binge watched the entire series on HBOGo a few months ago. Loved it. Definitely made me appreciate Fantastic Beasts much, much more the second time around.

Scrimgeour's opening lights to HP7p1, the "these are dark times, there is no denying..." monologue is one of my favorite opening scenes from a movie ever. It's so well done. I've watched it probably 4 or 5 times in the past 3 days.

speaking of the last couple of Ministers, I was sooooooooo hoping we were going to get that scene in HBP where the MoM visits the Weasley home over the holiday break trying to act like it's so casual and "oh my god, Harry Potter is actually here?!" like their transparency is laughable.
But then just when they have that whole work around the garden and Harry absolutely goes toe to toe with Scrimger, clearly he's trying to intimidate him but Harry ain't scared at all.

I knew, however, it had virtually zero shot of actually being included in the movie, just one of a myriad reasons the HBP film was fairly disappoint

Has anyone listened to the Binge Mode Harry Potter podcast from the ringer? I just started it last week and I highly recommend it. It’s allowing me to relive the magical journey of experiencing the books for the first time all over again and I love how in-depth Jason and Mallory go and how they explore the themes on a really academic/analytical level. I just finished the first book episodes and can’t wait to continue.

I have not, but will check it out. I've been religiously listening to Point North's "Dear Mr. Potter" (and other podcasts) which were great. Apparently, the man who ran it is having some serious personal problems and abruptly shut down and removed all of his podcasts.

    Re: The Harry Potter thread.

I got into Harry Potter after watching the movies with friends. First it was 1 and 2 on DVD. I think I saw Azkaban in the theaters and then every movie in the theaters after that. I finally got the books in January 2007 and read them all in anticipation of Deathly Hallows coming out that year. Order of the Phoenix was the first book I read before a movie came out.

I don't really have any notes on the books because I've only ever read them once and that was 11 years ago at this point. Movie wise

    1 & 2 - They're fine. Character and World building.
3 - I think this is good but I don't know why people consider it the best movie. I always feel like they like it because of the director.
4 - This was my favorite one for a long time. Characters you've enjoyed for a bit starting to grow up and the awkward situations therein.
5 - I really liked the book but something about the movie felt off for me.
6 - My favorite movie of the series. The characters are all in different situations then they've been before and the evil lurking is top notch. Lots of drama. Good humor too.
7.1 - I really enjoy this. Much like 6 our heroes are in a difficult position. I know it's basically "camping" but our they're are put to the test moreso than they've been before.
7.2 - All action and not really my favorite. I actually forget a lot of this movie other than the ending battle.

Haven’t read it in awhile. Don’t remember thinking is was a bad book. Why do you feel that way? Is this a retrospect thing or did you think that the first time you read it?

Azkaban remains my favorite book of the series.

But the series is masterful. Absolutely brilliant writing. Clear nods to influences, classic story telling devices, excellent character building...probably as close to perfect as any book series has ever been. I'm sad for the many that have dismissed it based on it's intended audience or the genre. My wife has absolutely no use for fantasy and she loved it out of the gate. The story and characters are so well thought out and written that it/they transcend genre classification.

4, 6 and 7 all hold a special place for me.

Initially when I first read it, 5 fell a bit flat, but upon a second read after completing the series it vaulted up to that upper echelon for me. Pretty much everything that happens from 4 on (the return of Voldemort, so to speak) is excellent

As much as I have enjoyed Fantastic Beasts, I agree. I'd like to see her take a crack at a good younger Dumbledore story.

she kinda has. She was the screenwriter for both Fantastic Beasts movies so far. I liked the first one okay enough but the second was just an absolute trainwreck. just a clusterfuck on steroids, and what is essentially a retcon with the "other secret Dumbledore" was so goddamn stupid. I feel like she's starting to show that there needs to be some other, additional step between what she writes and then what the basis for the film is when it's a film that's being done.
I believe a fairly significant factor for why there will be such a gap til when the next one is starting to get made is how much of a mess #2 was.

    Re: The Harry Potter thread.

Michael Gambon is a better Dumbledore than Richard Harris, especially for the later books and change in tone, by a country mile. By a GIGANTIC margin.

I didn't mind Richard Harris at all in the early movies, I liked him. But this comical anti-Gambon internet thing? Had no idea. Who gives a shit if the direction encouraged him to overreact in Goblet of Fire? Dumb throw away scene and people just keep repeating it? I went down a rabbit hole sorry.

He is awesome, and his voice is synonymous with Dumbledore anytime I see him in a movie.

    Fight me.
