I agree with this BUT if he is going to write on piano, he should put a lot of time into really learning to become a decent piano player. Otherwise, he should stick to his craft, the guitar.

That said, I think Dave should put the effort in.

I said it last night, either play piano or come up with some sort of guitar riff.

well, fair enough. But I do think that songwriters are often able to use their lack of facility on a new instrument to their advantage.

I'm just saying that one of the "jobs" of a songwriter is to seek inspiration wherever he or she finds it. As a guitar player myself I know that when I pick it up I often revert back to things I know and that have become second nature. If I was a songwriter, that would probably prove to be frustrating. But show me a few mandolin chords and I might come away with some inspiration for a song.

Even messing around with that little guitar of his seemed to inspire a few new songs for Dave. He was hearing things in a different way.

    just food for thought.

Lets go back to ADSR for a sec..

If Dave can pull off something better on ADSR than what Butch has been playing, wouldn't that satisfy the fans more? Wouldn't we be incredibly excited that Dave is being creative in the studio (with the piano) and moving past the three note OOMH? This song is too good lyrically and musically for Dave to sit in the backround and only play a 3-5 note, 20 second solo on guitar.
...i agree totally...let dave play piano and sing on this and allow rashawn to play muted trumpet where daves guitar solo is, and then rois sax solo (which i love on this song)...i think thatd work well

People People was a Peter Griesar tune. But I definitely still see what you're saying.
"So Much to Say" is also a Griesar tune... just sayin (I doubt we'll ever see people people though)

Just so some people realize if they aren't already aware of, but Dave has played the piano longer than he has played the guitar. He has written many of his riffs on the piano, like Recently for example. Don't let OOMH be a good example of Dave's playing abilities, that would be the same as using Proudest Monkey to show how good he is at the guitar.

Dave is not going to write or play as well as Butch on Piano until he drops the guitar for a while. Since I don't want that to happen, I would think he should just defer to Butch. Maybe he's trying to influence Butch's parts in the studio so that they're more of what he would write.
THAT would be good. I just don't want Dave sidetracked from writing what he needs to write, lyrics and some twangy rrrrrrrrriffs.

If Dave played piano on The Fly which I think he did, then if he can intertwine the guitar and piano together like that song, Ill be completely fine with him playing piano.

I'm totally down with the band trying new styles, as long as it's good music. Truthfully, I don't want some cookie-cut DMB songs. I'd rather them try something new and have it be awesome. Bands that hang around for over fifteen years don't do so by staying the same. Change is a good thing IMO.

I definitely agree, but the challenge is to make bold moves while retaining the same band aesthetic. They failed horribly at this with Everyday and Stand Up. BTCS was really the only successful growth/change the band underwent, IMO.

Seeing as they seem to be looking to BTCS as inspiration and a milestone to surpass, I think we're in for some solid shit
