The nuke theme runs on throughout the series of films. As time goes on though, when Godzilla starts attacking the city again and not the bad guys, is when the director is trying to be critical of Japan's role in the nuclear arms race.
It's really quite interesting. Even though some of the films from the late 70's were cheesy and had crazy sound effects, they actually did have a meaning. Best transition to watch
Gojira (Godzilla) -> Godzilla 1985. Two of the Americanized Godzilla films that actually has some chronology to it. You also get a double dose of Raymond Burr, which is a FTW.
