    Re: Australian Tour April 07.....

Spent Easter at Bluesfest. Had a wonderful time. Saw Warren Haynes there in the Monday. For some acts, I wish the Bluesfest sideshows weren't on when Bluesfest is on!

A vid of Invisible. A head in the way at times, but mostly have good shot of Warren http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBw4eZDlIf4

Saw some great guitar players, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Little Feat (& yes, they did the Dixie Chicken song, made me smile), the now 13yr old Hank Green stand outs. Some "stumbledupon" new acts, Yodelice, Bobby Long (if you blended Ryan Adams & Conor Oberst). The winner of the busking comp, Minnie Marks, all of 16 yrs old. One of the most stunning versions of Hallelujah I've ever heard (poss pushing Jeff Buckley from no 1) from Alex Lloyd as The Mad Bastards. Some outstanding swamp blues, from an oldie Tony Joe White & from some young Aussies, Mojo Bluesmen. Some surprisingly great bluegrass from Peter Rowan, that set won the "wandered in for a song & stayed for the rest of the set" award.

Trombone Shorty & Robert Randolph fantastic & won lots new fans. Trombone's cds sold out. Kate Miller-Heidke was brilliant. Great new song "Southern Cross Tattoo"....she's a very brave woman.

And the weather was great, gum boots once again stayed in the boot. The only significant rain was late of Monday night & that ended up being a good thing, because it happened as I was walking out to the car & went into the Juke Joint tent to avoid a sudden downpour & that's when The Mad Bastards sang Hallelujah. When the song finished, the rain stopped!

Bob Dylan was crap. Parody, caricature, laughing all the way to the bank. Was reminded of the character the Blues Brothers rescued from The Holiday Inn. Many people were v v annoyed as no close up on the screens & he played from the back of the stage so sight lines on the side of the stage were greatly limited. Of course, no communication that this was going to happen from Bluesfest admin. Wished I'd seen Jethro Tull. Tent was too crowded to try & exit during the set. But overall 5 great days.

A bit off-topic, but do you guys remember Marty Simpson from Australian Idol? The guy that did American Baby?
Well i went to school with him and played drums for his original bassist...anyway, he recorded with Steffan last year. The album isout in a few weeks

"Most people will remember Marty from Idol, where he was in the final four; however, since then he has immersed himself in what he loves and does best - making and playing music. After touring up and down the East Coast & performing at over 40 venues, playing at the hugely popular Rip Curl Pro surf festival at iconic Bells Beach and the Surfing Life Peer Poll Awards, Marty then packed his bags and travelled to the US. 'Exit' was recorded on both sides of the globe and produced by Ian Prichett (Angus & Julia Stone / The Beautiful Girls) and Robert Carranza (Jack Johnson). Co-writers include Ben Lee & Steffan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band). Says Marty "My trip to the United States was definitely the biggest highlight of my music career so far; I had the opportunity to co-write songs with a whole bunch of amazing people across America. Writing with Ben Lee and Steffan Lessard as a group was an amazing experience and the fact that Steffan was willing to write, hangout and even record on my album was a musical dream in itself as the Dave Matthews Band has been one of my most influential bands to date."

Great overview of a festival I'm unlikely to attend because of work committments (maybe when I retire?) especially you're comments about Bob Dylan. I recall a couple of visits ago he played piano from the back of the stage & the set was mainly obscure songs & people were unimpressed. But I think it's a bit of a lottery when you see Bob these days, almost as if it's 'I'm Bob Dylan & I'll do what I damn well like!'

I saw the Peter Rowan Band at Apollo Bay & it's so easy to be seduced by them, great players & all-male harmonies are a rare thing these days. Excellent stuff.

Just to clarify my comments about the Peter Rowan Band, the all-male harmonies were unique 'cos they all gathered around Peter Rowan's micraphone to sing the harmonies leaving their spot on the stage to gather in a kind of semi-circle.

Would love a DMB appearance at Bluesfest 2012. Just got the email. What are the chances of some DMB?

The date to mark in your calendar is Thursday 3rd November.
This means it is only days until we lift the lid on our first round of artists coming to share their musical genius with us at Bluesfest.
Our first announcement will include a number of superb headlining artists and it will only be the beginning of an exquisite journey ahead as a second magical announcement will be following just a couple of weeks after the first!
