New album opinions

Now that the 2014 tour is over can we please start discussing what the new album might be like or which songs could potentially be on it? Carter did say that there won't be a winter tour so they can start recording the next album. I am hoping to see an album with 11-13 songs with half being "older" songs like Shotgun and Sugar Will with the other half being newly made songs or songs that have really made it completely like Kill The Preacher. Your thoughts.

Would love to see songs like Shotgun, Sugar Will, GGT, Loving Wings, and The Idea of You (this one could really be a hit if they do a good job with it) on the new album. Hoping for a spring/early summer release.

I was excited about Away From The World because I felt like it was pulling DMB back into the classic DMB mode, back to their roots. Steve brings something great out of this band.

In this article, Dave said, "but he [Lillywhite] really does work with this band in a way that no one else does."

I'm less excited with Cavallo involved because I feel like he'll pull them back to the Big Whiskey style/sound.

In the anticipation of Big Whiskey and Away From The World, there were threads like this where lots of people were hoping for half new songs and half old songs from 2006-2007. I think this will finally happen here.

    Completely agree with you, unfortunately.

I'm sure it was just to sell records but I don't know how Dave can make comments like that and then not go back to Lillywhite.

Then again, in the Rolling Stone article he said he wanted to try something completely new with a sound that didn't sound like the old stuff.

All that says to me is that they better not put Shotgun, Good Good Time, Crazy Easy, etc. on the new album and have them sound like shit. I only want Lillywhite touching those.

I honestly think lillywhite is forever done. Only reason is away from the world was the lowest selling album they have ever had. So i want those songs on next album.

I think he is too. Which is quite a shame. Seeing as how, IMO, he had nothing to do with it being their lowest selling album ever. Especially considering there was very little promotion for it (in comparison to Big Whiskey, there was none).

this. i can't help but not feel excited at all about this new album for the main reason of cavallo producing. the producer shouldn't make that big of a difference since the band is playing, yet he clearly made the 4 best albums for dmb. i think the majority of the fans would agree on that. i hope i'm wrong but i think we're going to be fairly disappointed with whatever comes from this cd. however, all of this can be a moot point if all of the songs we want released via studio are in fact on this album, i.e. GGT, sugar will, idea of you, crazy easy, loving wings, shotgun. i think break for it is one of the bad bad songs in the past years. please leave that in the basement to die

I want and expect all new songs. I'd rather all their pent up (I hope) creativity go towards new ones. Then later in the sessions they can knock out some kind of live/not live disc.

Live/Not Live should be the last album they do.

Why do people even want a live/not live album? Those songs won't even come close to sounding like we all know and love.

Think about it, the bands sound is drastically different now compared to how it was when a lot of those songs debuted (sugar will, good good time, etc).

Only one I could realistically see them nailing in the studio is shotgun. But chances are very slim that they'll actually execute well. But even then, there will still be multiple live versions that are better.

    What's the point?

Im hoping that this time around there will be some older songs on the album. And some newer stuff too. I personally really like the way Big Whiskey sounded (with the exception of no Boyd and a lot of Tim) and am excited to see where this recording process takes the band.

In regular rotation? Like AFTW songs?

Anyway, I'm not even that thrilled for a new album. Of course I hope they break some great material...but my fear is that a new album will just saturate set lists even more. Think about it. The songs they consistently play from AFTW are If Only, and BBN. Not awful, but I could do without both of them at a show.

I know this is a little off topic.. but when do you guys think we'll see the next non-live trax live album? I think the last was Live in NYC, or Wrigley Field (correct me if I'm wrong). I think plenty of shows from this tour or last summer could be released.

Berkeley 3 night box set around Christmas time would be dope.

The only point of it to me would be those songs being in regular rotation again if they were on a new album. If they just throw them on a record and don't up their live play there is no point.

i want all new stuff. to me, recording old stuff is just moving backwards. sure, i love lillywhite, but im also excited to hear cavallo get another shot. lillywhite might bring them back to the old dmb sound we all love but ive heard the old dmb sound, one thing i loved and still love about big whiskey was it was something new. some just dont want the band to change and just be the band they were in the 90's, but times and people change, and the band i dont think wants to stay just being what they were. we all agree that typical, warehouse, last stop etc are unbelievable and dont understand why stuff gets shelved for shake me and you and me, but as artists, which dave and the boys are, you always think forward and want to be excited about the new, not the past. just human nature. idea of you, which i like, is already 8 years old. why would u want that recorded over something new and fresh. im pretty positive the band thinks this way.

I don't think any of the old songs will make it or else they would have by now. If the Idea of You DOES make it then they better not ruin it by putting the Ladies on it. They were an embarrassment.

I also think Lillywhite is completely done. Something didn't go right with the last sessions. As we all know the promotion was non existent. I think there may be more to that story.

Fine with Cavallo. He is the second best producer they've worked with and I'm psyched to see him take another try. First non Lillywhite producer they've ever given a second shot to. I just hope he utilizes
Boyd better. However I think they may be more on Boyd than Cavallo. I just don't think Boyd was very present. The when he played he sounded amazing. Listen to Funny the Way It is, #27, Beach Ball...he sounds perfect.

    Re: New album opinions

Today is exactly 2 years to the day AFTW was released...perfect day to make this thread!

Personally, I'm hoping to see it emerge within the next nine months. I wouldn't mind Sugarwill being on it but not Shotgun; that's Lillywhite or bust material.

I hope it has at least 6 songs that are over five minutes long, and for at least one of those songs to be over 6 minutes long. The album should be at least 60 minutes long and have decent cover art, and no stupid song titles or lyrics about stuff like full bellies or belly jelly...ugh. And no kids singing! Although a female backup vocalist (bring on the Lovely Ladies! ) would be welcome.

Also, the long songs should actually be GOOD. Half of Drunken Soldier was just a pathetic excuse to make a song that reached the length of Bartender, etc.

I'm really hopeful for this record. It's rare I'm fully satisfied by a DMB record---UTTAD and BTCS are still my big favorites, although I do think a lot of their other stuff, particularly LWS, Crash and Everyday are pretty good.

Agree with everything here but the bit about the ladies...

Fuck belly jelly. Such a cringe worthy line my god
