Re: Album of the Day

fun. Some Nights

Yeah, Will was right. This is pretty bad. Not sure if it's the worst LP I've heard this year, because WZRD was a really sad listen. At least this fun. album has some enthusiasm behind it? Still, the processed super-clean sound, programmed drumbeats, jolts of masturbatory auto-tune makes this thing pretty nauseating. Terrible/5

i wasn't expecting the record to sound like it does. the cover (for whatever reason) led to me to believe it was gonna be more rock and roll-y than pop whatever.

You ever get the chance to check out his other discography? I know there's a ton of it and getting a feel for the material can be tough, since it's all so distinctly his style. It took me a while to sift through it.

I haven't yet. I really want to be able to give it my full attention. I've been so into 'Magnolia Electric Co.' that I haven't moved on yet. Repeated listens have just revealed more layers and I really love that record.

That's too bad. The Soft Bulletin is probably one of the most imaginative and creative pop masterpieces....ever. Love that album.

    Spiritualized Sweet Heart Sweet Light

Love this album cover. So bizarre. I like that they are kicking out the indulgent bluesy jams a bit more on this one, and obviously I expect a pretty lengthy listen from Spiritualized but it definitely does drag a bit at a few spots. Definitely going to take a few more listens to process this LP, but I will definitely be replaying "Mary" a lot. Love that track.

for me it's mostly Wayne's voice. my wife gets after me sometimes for liking bands that "can't sing", but she loves the Flaming Lips. Makes no sense.

The Guided By Voices seemed fairly disjointed to me. Probably the mass of one-two minute tracks. Feels rushed because of that.

That's their trademark though. But yeah, I wasn't a huge fan other than 3 or so really good tracks.

First Aid Kit is meh, but "Emmylou" is one of my favorite songs of the year

Yeah, I gathered as much. I'm fine with, say, 10 bang bang bang tracks like that, or short tracks between longer songs. But when you go 21, all uptempo but different, it just seems kind all over the place. A few good bits in there, but lost in the bigger picture.

I was into the First Aid Kit, but lost steam over the back half.
