So the Mayor clearly was with Chief's dad before he went nuts it seems. Interesting dynamic.

Looks like we get a better look at the preacher next week and I'm very intrigued by the insurance lady.

I'm so glad the Chief wasn't just imagining this guy. After the reports that he was the only one on the scene with all the dead dogs I said out loud "If this guy turns out to be a figment of his imagination, I'm done here". I'm going to hang around but not so sure for how long. So far, I'm interested but some of it is very meh. Still early.

he still could be imagining the dog shooter, i'm not sure why you'd be so positive that it wasn't an alter-ego/imagination after that episode?

Because his daughter and her friend both saw him. His daughter asked who he was after he left, did she not?

I thought for sure the guy would be imaginary too. was thinking about it the entire episode. I think literally the only thing that implied he was real was the daughter asking about him

haha the dialogue was purposely ambiguous to leave you guessing.

    paraphrasing but it went like

dogshooter: "put those beers in the fridge for your dad."--something a dad would say to his own daughter as well

daughter after "the guy" leaves: "who was that?"--something a concerned daughter might say to her father if she hears him talking to himself

    chief: "no one"

ambiguity at it's finest, everything the girls said to the dog shooter could easily be said to the chief himself, nothing is proven yet

The daughter and her friend are the only other two people in the show to have seen this guy other than our friend the Chief as far as I can remember. I feel like the scene showing that his dad is clearly crazy also hinted at the fact this might all be in his head.

Semi-related: when the Chief woke up super late, was his bedside table littered with prescription pill bottles or am I completely making that up? Was that real life or one of his dream sequences?

Very good points. Didn't read that much into that scene, perhaps need to be paying more attention.

not to mention the dog shooter leaves "his" truck in the driveway saying he doesn't need it anymore, which would make you think it was the chief's all along...i mean, who gives away a $50,000 truck to someone they just met?

it's possible that he's real, but the door is wide open for other possibilities too, and i doubt we get a solid answer before the end of the season, if at all

Thought the "mystery man" was possibly going to be Chief's imagination, but the girls noticing him kind of makes me think otherwise now. Wasn't him going back and finding his bagel halves supposed to show that he's most likely not crazy after all?

I don't really get how the dog shooting is a huge storyline. why didn't the chief just tell people that there were a bunch of rabid dogs? couldn't the local vet or whatever confirm that pretty quickly?

That was certainly the implication, but this doesn't seem like a show that will be that cut and dry.

I really hope that there is another explanation, though, and that he isn't going crazy. Feel like that'd be rather cheap.

I feel like there's something more to it. In the pilot when he approached that dog, it just seemed scared. So maybe it's not known that they get all crazy and take down deer like a pack of wolves.

no i think the bagel part was to keep you guessing, there are things happening that could point to both him being "crazy" and him being perfectly sane

i'm not so sure about this either because the first dog that the "other man" shot was stuffed in his (the chief's) trunk for who knows what reason? then his daughter found it and buried it...and we don't know what happened to the pack of dogs that were killed

I think it's also possible that they aren't actually rabid, too.

Maybe they have just adapted since the event occurred. Perhaps food isn't as readily available for them or something.

So the second episode - did it make any of you more interested in the show or less interested?

I'm waiting on more feedback before I dive into this one.

They did not mention what she wasn't strong enough for. My guess is just her general mentality. I understood it as her will wasn't strong enough to fully embrace the lifestyle that the GR choose to live yet.

Also, H2P, I have enjoyed the acting. Theroux has actually been a pleasant surprise for me.

the previous written notes said (paraphrasing) "she's going to leave" and "push her harder"

to which laurie replied "she's not strong enough yet"

    just in general i think

I definitely think their is an initiation of some sort. Remember it was mentioned that she is currently in a pledge house where they can still speak and don't have to wear white. I think that's why the scene with her giving away her mom's shirt was key, she's going through some rite of passage to be a part of the GR.

Did anyone else laugh hysterically when the giant message "We don't smoke for our enjoyment. We smoke for our faith" popped up in the house. That was a serious WTF moment for me.

Im pretty sure the daughter and the Dog Killer shared a quick few words at the door, did they not? That would confirm it for me that the guy is in fact real.

Atlanta 2006, my wife and I enjoyed a great show. I drank moderately and had a bite to eat before leaving. Upon our arrival home we had intercourse in the missionary position for the sole purpose of procreation. A child was concieved and is now the light of our lives.

that confirms nothing though, it could've just been the daughter talking to her dad's alternate personality, and i'm like 99.99% sure that's what they want you to think

The more I think about it the more this makes sense. Especially since they showed his dad clearly has imaginary friends.

    exactly

they writers want you to be uncertain of the chief's mental state until the very end i'm thinking, and even at the end we may not know for sure what's going on with him

I personally don't think he is imagining it, but I think H2P's point is pretty spot on. I think it's clear they want that ambiguity to be there still, which is why they introduced us to the dad.
