Horrible moments to be a DMB fan.

My biggest gripe with the current state of the band is it's lack of Boyd. I just don't get what's going on there and why he's so drowned out. They had Butch and Tim back in winter 98 and you can hear Boyd perfectly fine so it's clearly something to do with how he's mixed. We all know he's just completely turned down during the Belly Belly Nice solo. We've all seen him sawing away during that section but hear nothing. What makes me even more annoyed is that when they release soundboard recordings you can hear him just fine and he sounds great. The horn section has completely changed it's sound with less improv and more set lines. That coupled with Tim's shredding and the lack of Boyd have completely changed the sound of the band. At least if Boyd were more prominent in the mix there would be more of that true DMB sound, but he's just nowhere to be found on some tunes. This past summer was the best it's been in awhile, but he's still missing every now and then. One of the big reasons I loved the acoustic set was because you could really hear Boyd. Just sounded like more old school DMB to me. I've said this before, but one of the best mixes I've heard on a tape of this lineup is from the two nights at Mansfield 2012. You can hear Boyd on everything and it sounds awesome. There's no reason you can't have him up more in the mix and get a more DMB sounding DMB!

Gripe #2. Rashawn Ross. Didn't like him when he joined in 06 and still don't. He completely ruins the true DMB sound and does absolutely nothing for me. I wish so badly the only horn in the band was Jeff. Anytime Jeff gets a great solo going Rashawn has to jump in and start screeching over top of it. He is a showboat and plays with very little taste or dynamic. We hear a lot of people complain about Boyd being out of tune, but how does no one notice that Rashawn is just as bad? His main goal is to play as loud and high as possible and all it does is result in ear piercing out of tune solos. It will never happen, but Rashawn should get the boot. For whatever reason Dave seems to have a hard on for the guy. Too bad, the music would be WAY better without him.
