I think he solved that issue, only to now be facing the issue of someone figuring out that he essentially stole $50,000 from the company.

    50,000? I thought it was like 8,000.

Oh, that makes more sense. I think I'm thinking of the total amount of surplus that he wanted to be distributed to the partners.

Also, $19,000/yr (1965) comes to ~$138,000/yr (2012) and she got a promotion. I'd fucking leave too.

Yup, because his share of the fictitious bonus would be enough to get him out of debt.

Is it ever going to be explained why he's in debt? He was talking to his wife about something to do with his son's school, but I'm not sure.

No, of course it wasn't. I was speaking for myself (hence the I'd in the post...)

It's pretty clear that getting out from under Don's shadow is her biggest concern.

I didn't see it as surprising. Don has always been a man who is in control of everything. With Megan getting more independent by the week, Peggy leaving is Don losing one of the last people he thought he had control of in life.

Lane embezzled 8,000 dollars from the company to pay what he owed. But correct me if I'm wrong, to do that, didn't he go to their banker and extend SCDP's credit extension by $50,000? That's why the bonuses were made available and that's also why in this previous episode when Cooper asked if they could just extend their credit to Lane he got all nervous. Because he had just done that to save his ass. He's gonna get caught.

EDIT: Actually I'm positive that's all correct, look here: http://www.amctv.com/shows/mad-men/e...hristmas-waltz

Yea that's what I thought happened. He extended the credit and then wrote a check from Don to himself.

Yeah I thought that too, but remember last episode he mentioned to Joan that he didn't stand up for himself and ask for enough money when SCDP was formed.

    Re: Mad Men

So my whole point with asking about Lane's issue with needing the $8,000 was that does anyone else feel like it came out of the blue? I mean in Lane's fairly long character arc, does that situation make sense for him? I mean it's turning into a huge issue where people are speculating that Lane might kill himself over this issue because it's currently just building and building into something bigger with the embezzlement and everything. I just have trouble seeing why the writers put Lane into this situation or why it fits his character.

That being said, why didn't Lane just approach Don in private and tell him he's going to go to jail if he doesn't get $8,000? I mean surely Don would have helped him out to keep him out of jail, right? It just seems odd that Lane would first get into this situation and then go to such extremes to hide it when I would have go guess someone would have been willing to help him.

Yes. It's been implied at least this season that Lane has some money issues. I just don't get how that really fits in with his character.

Though he did go through a divorce, right?

You have to be pretty well off to have tax issues of that magnitude... If Peggy's 19k salary is worth 135k now then Lane's 8k debt is like 50k... You've got to be pretty well off to have a 50k tax liability in the first place.

I disagree with that. I think what he said to Joan in the most recent episode is true — he's spent his entire life doing what everyone else wanted to do so they were happy at his own expense. In this case, it's about money.

I don't think he's divorced; I think they just live in separate countries, which would also be a financial strain.

I get that it could be a pride thing that he doesn't want to ask Roger or Don for the money, but that has to be a better option than embezzling it. Maybe he just thinks there's a good chance he won't get caught, since he's almost solely responsible for financials.
