I say to each their own when it comes the music and running. My wife loves to listen to her music when she runs, because like you stated, she finds it boring to run without music. What ever gets you on the road exercising works.
I think for me when I run, I find things to occupy my thoughts while I run. I check my Garmin for time and milage. I think about whatever. I actually observe the area I live in. (It is amazing the places you find when you run by them, and not whiz by in your car.) About a month after I gave up my iPod, I end up running a 1/2 marathon in the rain. I was glad that I had run without an iPod before then, or it could have been a long race. Plus, I have had the fortunate opportunity to run in Central Park and along the Hudson River in NYC and along the St. Charles River in Boston this year. I think that not having an iPod helped me take in the scenery of both locations.

Solid info. I have the one from Nike. I think it was $20. Might smell a bit now, but it worked like a champ when I used it.
