So much this. Then when you find a shoe you love, buy several extra pairs on sale when the newer model hits the market.

Rhode Race Newport half done and in the books. Perfect weather, gorgeous course, but tough course. Glad I dropped down to the half on this one, the full would have been brutal.

Thanks, Laura. Have fun on the 5k. How is marathon recovery going?

My son and I will do a 4 mile run next Sunday. It won't be a balls out run, just a nice run with my boy. Then I have another half May 17, not sure if I will race it or pace a friend.

Love, love, love marathon Monday. Will watch for Hassay. Curios to see how Rupp does in the men's race. He got knicked up in his final tune-up race, so he could drop out during the race if it makes more sense then pounding his body in a race that won't pay any dividends. Again, why marathon Monday is so much fun.

slow transition back to regular running, mainly 4-5 milers 5x week. enjoying the extra time for strength training in the gym, lot of focus on my back

just ordered this from amazon, looking forward to utilizing the plans for chicago when june comes

Great to hear that you are recovering well. That book is the bomb! My initial marathon plans were taken from that book. I still used modified versions of that plan today.

Finished Bloomsday (12k) with my daughter in 75 minutes; she lost to mom by about 5 minutes. Course had a lot more hills than I remember, so I definitely didn't do the greatest job with expectation management throughout the race
I am excited for the official results to come out because she slayed it up "Doomsday Hill."

Did a ten-miler under the weather and finished 1:44. Several minutes off of a PR. I'll take it.

Looks like a solid workout week, Laura. Did you do an entire marathon training schedule? If so, how many weeks? I am going to sign up for the NYRR virtual trainer for the marathon this year. I am willing to give something new a try after not much recent success at the marathon distance. I think it starts in early August, doing 12 weeks, but I may sign up for the 16 weeks. Not sure yet.

In the meantime, have a 10K this weekend in Queens. Thank SBJ that the heat in the NE will subside by Saturday. Hoping to give a go for this race.

yup, 16 week plan, peaking at about 55 weeks. i met a girl who had a successful plan with the sugarloaf race, and she was generous to basically give me her plan tweaked it a bit

im including 2 speed workouts a week (tempo plus some sort of track repeat workout), and a total of 1-2 rest days/week, trying to be flexible with summer

Wow, great to hear. Pretty cool that she offered to help and give you her plan. The speed work is so crucial to the plan as well. Not fun, nor easy to do, especially over the summer, but very needed in a successful training plan.

Yeah, intervals are a bitch. So are hills. But both have helped me immensely. Hoping to cut a couple minutes off my 1/2 PR this fall.

Starting to train for my 8 hour Toughest Mudder in August. Anyone have any tips on more endurance based training? I have done a marathon before, but this is even longer than that. I am hoping to clock about 20-25 miles during the 8 hours I have for the Toughest Mudder and that includes obstacles. What have people ate during a race like this to help refuel?

Probably some good tips in this Tim Ferriss podcast. He interviews Amelia Boone - "Amelia Boone (@ameliaboone) has been called the Michael Jordan of obstacle course racing (OCR). This episode explores her training, nutrition, rehab, “pre-hab,” and more."

If you can find training partners, any speed/interval/hill workout is much more enjoyable. The key it to make a workout with a training partner collaborative, not competitive. Save race pace for race day. I have also learned that recovery days, aka running slow or easy pace, are just as crucial as any speed workout. As I was told 'to run fast on speed days, you have to run slow on recovery/easy days'.

She is a freak of nature. I ran with her for about a mile a few years back at a Tough Mudder before she took off. An absolute machine and incredibly nice.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

It is tough to drop it down a gear as we all get used to a certain pace that we run at, but is it vital if you want to run a good speed workout to have a good easy/recovery day. A good gauge for me on easy/recovery days is talk to myself when I run. Sounds weird, but when I can't speak a full sentence without pausing to catch my breath, I know I am working too hard. I also make an effort to not change my form on easy days, just run easier, but with good form.
