Honestly no, no solid rumors. Some insiders have mentioned the heart disease, that he had an appointment with his doc in the past month but it wasn't emergent and he could've kept coaching for a few more years...but there's no one rumor that multiple people are validating.
Others said part of a local foundation that pays him part of his salary demanded Mike Stoops be fired or lose that part of his salary...or that he wanted to retire after the Sugar Bowl but did OU a solid to stick around a few more months and wrap up a really great recruiting class for OU.

His team didn't even know when the first tweet about it went out. After it hit the twittersphere OU announced he was going to have a meeting with the players that afternoon and then a press conference. And at the press conference he said he had just told the players 1-2 hours prior.
Apparently a couple reporters had been informed a few days in advance and were supposed to stay quiet, but then one (Barry Tramel from The Oklahoman) finally posted it on twitter the day of before any official announcement from OU.
