Re: Album of the Day

I just bought Coltrane's "Interstellar Space", Mingus' "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", and Parker's, Gillespie's, Monk's, and Rich's "Bird and Diz"

I'd say no. It's pointless. The winner would be In Rainbows, easily, without a doubt, so what's the point? You'll find more interesting lists and suggestions in the 2007 albums thread.

I'm doing a top 25 list. But ranked by votes, instead of a ton of individual lists. I'm also going to write write-ups about each album, link to metacritic pages... do all the dirty work for other people looking for new albums. I'm not just doing a #1.

That's cool, I'm always down for lists. But all I'm saying is we all know what the #1 will be.

Although, links to rateyourmusic pages would be the best IMO. Great site IMO.

For example, best album of the year:

    Cryptograms

Amazing album, the last track is one of the best hip-hop songs I've ever heard.

Definitely one of my favorite jazz albums. I don't particularly love Mingus Ah Um but this is definitely one of the best jazz albums out there.

Also, today I'm listening to Giant Steps again today, as well as Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu, and Herbie Hancock's Empyrean Isles (I'm still waiting for my copy of Maiden Voyage). These are definitely three of my favorite jazz albums (Mahavishnu doesn't quite count I guess). Giant Steps is definitely my favorite Coltrane album, the title track, "Countdown," "Naima," and "Spiral" are particularly incredible, but the whole album is phenomenal. Really good pacing and flow for a jazz album, IMO.

Also, I also just downloaded Milestones on Ruckus but can't quite penetrate it. Obviously "Sid's Ahead" is good and "Milestones" is a fantastic track, but I think it will require more time. I didn't quite get The Black Saint for a while, it seems that some jazz albums require numerous listens to really distinguish between different tracks and to hear and recognize all of the nuances.

I personally would classify Mahavishnu as jazz, actually. And yeah man you'll really love Herbie's Maiden Voyage. Great album.
I adore Giant Steps, although A Love Supreme is my favorite Coltrane album.
Yes, Milestones may take a few listens to fully digest, but once you do it'll just blow you away. The title track, along with Miles' "So What" and Dave Brubeck's "Take Five", exemplifies everything that is jazz absolutely perfectly.
Not sure why or how, but I think I digested Black Saint upon first listen (last night) . Those first two tracks just gave me that good ol' "Holy Crap " feeling.

I know. I've had my history with him...well come to think of it, everyone has. He's really just a lonely bunny who needs someone to cuddle with.

    I'll also add:

    Little Brother - Getback

Illmind and 9thwonder's production on this is beyond perfectly tight. Phonte has some great lines too.
