Member the "black box" aka Cable Descrambler? Member when, not too long ago but like 10-20 years ago, you could buy one, plug it in, and get all those pesky scrambled cable channels you loved for free? I'm talking Playboy, Spice, HBO, Playboy, Disney, which for some reason was a premium channel at that time. I member. Not sure why it hasn't been done with digital yet with all these tech wizes and computer hackers out there. We had one up til the digital switch in like 2000, only paid for internet and got every cable channel for free. Fuck paying corporations for shit.

$310 a month, jesus. Why do you need a landline?

I had signed up for Directv for my mom, they said it would be $89.99/month. She had it for 2 months and it was never that price. I had to call them multiple times to get it near that price. They said she was a new customer because she had never had it, then they changed their mind and said since she had Uverse, she was not a new customer. It was shitty service and then when she died, they tried to charge a cancellation fee of $460. I'm still fighting them on that. Shit company.

I don't think I will ever have cable again. We pay $45 for internet and $10 for Netflix and that's it. Hacked Firestick, antenna, and family for Hulu and everything else.

Reading into jailbreaking an Amazon Fire TV Stick. Anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to get myself in trouble, but from what I'm reading it's access to all sorts of streaming and live TV. The word "Kodi" is thrown around a lot.

Search this thread for talk about it. All you're doing is downloading Kodi, a legal app in itself, then picking and installing a premade "build" in Kodi that gives you access to tons of links to streaming stuff.

Loaning a jail broken Amazon stick from a friend to try it out. Good to know I can put my Netflix/Spotify on there (for now). I'm curious how much live TV/sports i'll be able to stream. A cable/Sling TV bill is what I'm trying to avoid.

It's definitely tougher, in my experience, to try to find a stream in Kodi, as opposed to using one of the paid apps like WatchESPN or lately I've been using a Fox Sports South app with my parents' log in for Braves and Atlanta United games.

For the former, I tend to have to go through a bunch of different links and sources before finding one that works, if ever.

Bummer. Worth a try. I still have cable for the rest of the month so I'll have a backup option for the NBA conference finals this month if I have a hard time streaming. Probably going to end up going with Sling if I have difficulty streaming.

I mean, my bro-in-law is a Kodi expert it seems and he watches sports 24/7, and he doesn't seem to have a problem with it. He may know better sources than me, or he's just more persistent

its almost impossible to get a strong clear consistent feed for any sporting event through kodi. legit apps like nbcsports, watchespn, tnt, etc.. those are fine. but through sportsdevil and other kodi apps, damn near impossible (especially during NFL season). i will usually find a good site online and then cast it to the tv. had a great deal of success doing that with the nhl playoffs. some really solid streams...hd too.

What are you using to find them online to cast?

I don't have any issue when I updated the Kodi app every 4 months or so.

I've thought about cutting the cord multiple times, but it just never seems worth it.

With the price of internet on its own and then adding subscriptions, aren't you near the cost of cable anyway (assuming you don't share logins)? We just moved and got a three-year rate with Spectrum for $120ish that gets us Internet and their "gold level" channels. I think I calculated it out once and after the year of internet at the introductory rate I'd be paying ~$100 with all subscriptions.

My savings ended up being more in the $40-$50 range. It all really depends on how many a la carte subscriptions you want/need. Lots of savings to be had if you can get by with one or two. But yeah, if you need Netflix, Hulu, Sling, and HBO to watch everything you want then it can stop making sense.

Has anyone tried any of those OTA DVRs like HDHomerun or Tablo? What has your experience been? This is my first year cord-cutting, and I'm getting a little anxious as football season rolls around that I won't be able to DVR Notre Dame and other big games if I'm out and about. I have Playstation Vue which has DVR services for cable, but ND games are all on NBC. Haven't been able to verify if I can get full-game replays on the NBC Sports App.

Was thinking I'd have to invest in some hardware for Tablo or HDHomerun, but that it could potentially eliminate my need to subscribe to Hulu, as I use Hulu almost exclusively for watching shows that air on broadcast networks.

Anyone else subscribe to HBO Now just for GoT and then cancel? I've done that the last two years (methinks). Worth the $15 a month. If I remember correctly a couple years ago the app was shit show when trying to watch GoT while it aired. This year it's been perfect.

Honestly, I don't think Netflix really fits here. Netflix is becoming a thing everyone is expected to have regardless of cable or not.
