Arrested Development (the movie)

There seems to be a lot of AD fans on the boards, so figured this was worth posting. I searched for the regular AR thread, but couldn't find it. Anyways two updates on the movie I recently found:

http://movies.ign.com/articles/949/949549p1.html

Arrested Development Movie Update
Creator talks about the status of the script and if Michael Cera will return.

January 14, 2009 - No one was surprised when Mitch Hurwitz, creator of Arrested Development, was asked about the status of the Arrested Development movie at the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, including Hurwitz himself – after all, he was sitting on stage with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, the former Arrested stars who will be voice performers in Hurwitz's new animated series, Sit Down, Shut Up.

Regarding an Arrested movie, Hurwitz said, "We have a deal with Fox Searchlight," before adding, "We have a story – which is Valkyrie meets Hotel for Dogs." Hurwitz said they were currently working on locking in the cast and remarked, "I'm really optimistic. We're getting close."

After the panel, I was one of a smaller group of journalists who spoke to Hurwitz, and we asked him the status of securing Michael Cera for the film, who has been more reluctant than others to commit to returning to play his character in the Arrested Development movie. Said Hurwitz of Cera potentially returning, "I hope so. I hope so. It's a big priority."

Asked if he had a way to rework the story, should Cera not come back, Hurwitz replied, "Well, I haven't written the story, truthfully. The Valkyrie thing was truly just a ruse!" Hurwitz explained that when it came to writing the script, "I do want to wait until I know who's in it, because it won't be like a big paying job, this movie. So it's not something I want to do on spec. I kind of want to know that we're making this. We're working on it."

Hurwitz added, "I will say about Michael Cera – he is a very, very smart guy. He's a very thoughtful guy. I remember when we were casting for Arrested, the TV show, and I'd seen him in a pilot years earlier, so I set out to get him. He was only 14 at the time. I Said, 'Let's get that kid. I think his name is Michael Cera. I think he lives in Canada.' I'm waiting and waiting to hear back, and after about three weeks I hear, 'Michael Cera responded to the script.' And I felt like, 'I didn't realize that was a step,' you know? But it gave me big respect for him, because it was like, you're not just some whore. You want to read the script, you want to understand the character. This is a young boy! So he's making smart decisions for himself… but I hope this will be one of them!"

Tambor says Cera will be Arrested again.

January 30, 2009 - Jeffrey Tambor insists that his former co-star Michael Cera will indeed be back for the big screen version of their cult classic TV series Arrested Development.

Tambor told The New York Daily News, "If I have to call him up and say, 'Get on set right now, young man,' he'll be there." Tambor, who played Cera's incarcerated grandfather on the short-lived but beloved Fox series, added, "The movie is going to happen this year, and Michael Cera is on board. Trust me."

This movie must include Michael Cera. He was one of the best parts of the television show. I'm very excited for this film.

If there is no George Michael, there is no movie as far as I'm concerned. But this is some great news to hear.

This is untrue. Between Gob, Buster, Lindsey, Tobias, Gene Parmesain, Barry Zuckerman, among others, this movie would be fine without George Michael. He should be there, because I think he's one of the best characters, but the movie would definitly not fail because he was missing.

FYI -- it's over in the Chat section. But the search function does suck (at least, I haven't search for anything since the "new" site stuff).

I couldn't possibly disagree more. I've got such a pedophiliac man-crush on Cera, seriously for as young as he was at the time of filming that, the amount of impeccable subtle comic timing he showed, holding his own with those older actors... incredible.

I wouldn't bet on a fail. It was one of the most consistent shows from episode to episode while it had it's run. I have a lot of confidence, especially if everyone is signed on.

There's no question it'll fail from a money standpoint. Nobody watched the television show when it was on, and nobody will go see this movie. It's sort of similar to Family Guy's first run. Nobody really cared and then it came off the air and with the DVDs coming out it became a huge cult phenomenon. There still won't be many people going to see the movie outside of the real die-hards.

Oh, gotcha. I thought Berman meant a fail as far as content was concerned.

I'm willing to bet it makes a small profit. There are plenty more people who watched it today than they did in 2006 (me being one of them), especially with the DVDs, Hulu, and arresteddevelopment.msn.com available to the public.

I'm one of the many people who got into this show after it was canceled. I had never even heard of it while it was airing, and I randomly saw an episode after it was over. Since then, I've purchased all three seasons and watched the series 2-3 times through.

I think there are quite a few like me, and even more will jump on board when the movie gets closer to being released. I bet it does better at the box office than Hurwitz (is leading everyone to believe he) thinks.

You know, I almost hate you people that only caught on after the show was canned. I mean, its obviously not your fault, but I just wish YOU WOULD HAVE DISCOVERED THE SHOW WHEN IT WAS ON. Because who knows, it might still be.

Either way, I'm eager with anticipation for this project. Its second only behind the TDK sequel, which has also picked up steam as of late.
