Re: Arrested Development (the movie)

The main thing that S4 exposed was that GOB and Tobias are reaaaaallllly weak characters when they're the primary focus. The best part of the show was watching these people interact with each other...which they couldn't do with the structure of the season. They should have waited til everyone could get together and work on it as a group.

Agreed. What was also great about the original show was the dry and extremely subtle humor, which is what made it such a rewatchable show. The humor wasn't just handed to you, but it also didn't try so hard. Season 4 tried so hard to be something it wasn't and failed miserably. The humor was way more in your face and even somewhat over the top. For instance, I'll just say the Buster episode...the scene where he's by himself in the apartment? Disturbing.

I have to think he and they all have well received this criticism and want to aim higher for what they're doing.
I have a hard time believing this.

He could've kept the old format and then cut them all to be in the same episodes more frequently. It was a stylistic choice.

He saw an opportunity to try something creatively and took a chance. I don't fault him for that.

It was worth taking and he assumed that, given how people had watched S1-3 over and over, that people would watch S4 over and over until they caught every detail and every connection.

But I do think it didn't work out as well as he'd hoped.

It certainly didn't work well for me, because i can't even watch it. I barely made it through the first time, and I tried giving it another shot, but it's just so bad.

    The quote though

“In talks with Netflix we all felt that stories about a narcissistic, erratically behaving family in the building business ― and their desperate abuses of power ― are really underrepresented on TV these days,” Mitchell Hurwitz said in a statement.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT SEASON 5 WILL BE A MURDER MYSTERY

“The central spine of that story of is the death of Liza Minnelli’s character, and a bit of whodunit … That’s sort of a central thread around which [creator Mitch Hurwitz] is going to braid in all the colorful plot complications that he knows how to do.”

damn, I knew there was going to be a new run of episodes, but I didn't realize they're literally in the middle of production right now!! Who's to say HOW FAR in production, but they're shooting them! What a positive! Ron Howard was tweeting a scene yesterday featuring both he and his wife Cheryl on screen in a scene (I"M not sure if in any meta-way he'll actually be doing the usual narration but for some reason has it being done with the camera on him...)

but dude... it's actually getting shot!! huzzah!!

    This is interesting

    http://tvline.com/2018/05/01/arreste...ason-5-update/

"In a two-part letter to the show’s fans, Hurwitz explained that “in between Season 4 and this upcoming Season 5, I had time to take that Rashomon-type story and recut it — shuffling the content from 15 individualized stories into 22 interwoven stories the lengths of the original series.” Hurwitz says he “pursued it as a comedic experiment to see if new jokes and new perspective would emerge from a remix that features all the Bluths in every episode, and where the simultaneity of the story plays out chronologically.” And he’s “really excited about the final result.”

Very intrigued to watch the S4 "remix," but more excited that he implied that S5 is basically going to drop very soon. Can't wait!

S4 was a disaster. Hopefully going back to the old format will make the re-watch more enjoyable. Guess i'll have to watch.

I've heard the same. I immediately like that all the episodes are 22-23 minutes now. That's the perfect length for the show, some of the season 4 ones just dragged on way too long. I'm excited to check it out.

Thought the episodes weren't supposed to drop until today, but started watching it last night. I am a huge Arrested Development fan, and I HATED season 4. I also hated that I did, but it was just so bad. That said, so far the remix is absolutely an improvement. I think we got through about 4 or 5 episodes. Started nodding off the last two, but the first couple actually got some belly laughs out of us. But bad jokes are bad jokes, and weird awful characters are just that no matter how you cut the show. I'm going to watch the whole season, but a few episodes in and I forgot about the Tobias/Lindsay/methodone stuff and the Bark guy. That stuff is just so bad and over the top weird to me. Everything flows much better though, and I think because the episodes aren't solely focused on one or two members of the family it opens things up to be a little funnier. So while the stuff with Tobias, Lindsay, Bark and the Fantastic Four woman is just weird to me it's not taking up an entire episode, so they can cut over to GOB or Michael and get some laughs.

Can someone explain what this remixed season actually is? Was there any new filming or is it quite literally just S4 cut and spliced to flow better?

It's the latter. No new footage. Hurwitz went back and re-cut the season so it's 22 shorter episodes that feature all of the characters in each episode instead of 40 minute episodes focused on one character.

He also implied that Season 5 is gonna drop very soon, which I'm very surprised isn't getting more attention cuz that's what is really exciting.

yeah I saw his quotes I just kind of was confused how this remix was getting so much attention without new filming. Ill give it a try because I literally couldnt even get through all of S4 but it just didnt even seem all that funny in general. The writing was bad just as much as the format was.

    Very excited for S5 though.
