Re: The Decemberists

New Decemberists EP announced for release on October 9, 2015. New song is available to stream. It was played a few times on his solo tour back in 2013/2014. I personally didn't get to see it live. Album cut is fantastic. Very Decemberists-y.

No, right now I'm doing Dallas and Austin. I'm 50/50 on ACL right now so it may be 3 in a row

I think the ACL show is gonna be interesting, considering they're playing them less than 20 hours apart from each set. Hopefully, that'll lead to some variety for you. I hope they play a few from this EP that's due out.

Where is "around me at all" located at? Judging by your DMB tour history, looks like you could have caught them at a reasonable drive a few times this past tour...

Hoping for a short leg this summer around their two announced US dates!

I heard a clip of one of their songs on Instagram that sounded like it had an accordion on it or something. Really neat sound.

What's a good album to start with?

I started out with The Crane Wife many years ago and then went to their older stuff and have been keeping up with new albums since then. I feel like The Crane Wife can be somewhat of a good bridge between newer and older stuff. Definitely don't start out with Hazards of Love. It's awesome, but it helps if you "get" The Decemberists before getting into that one. It will be more meaningful then I think.

Start with picaresque. It's held in regard as their best and most significant contribution to indie folk. Honestly read some things recently where it was mentioned in the same sentence as "in the aero plane over the sea," which is legit one of the greatest albums of all time

I can definitely hear Neutral Milk Hotel's influence in The Decemberist's music. But by themselves The Decemberists are legitimately great. Great songwriters who record great (or at least pretty good) albums and are an incredible live band.

Start with Picaresque, but listen to everything.

It might be their best, which is almost why I wouldn't want to start with it. I guess I like the approach of "if you like this, then you'll LOVE this". Otherwise it might feel all down hill from there if you start at the top.

And I had never once ever heard of Neutral Milk Hotel before. Seems odd considering the praise that album has. I'll have to check it out.

Pretty much NMH released aero plane in 97? I think.

Anyway Jeff magnum (singer) got so burnt out from
Performing on their first tour promoting it that they disbanded and he walked away from music for like 10-12 years. It wasn't a too popular album when it came out but then The age of torrenting happened and aero plane blew up. Became an instant classic and will probably be known as one of the greatest albums in this genre of all time. Decemberists, arcade fire...you can go on and on with how many bands use nmh as an inspiration.

Legend has it that one day magnum invited his friends over for a rooftop Party and he performed surprisingly to much praise. He booked a couple solo shows where he performed pretty much the whole record and all the shows sold out. Nmh then got back together and toured. Shows kept selling out so they kept adding shows and legs to the tour until they called it quits early last year (I think). I luckily caught them twice, last time in July 2014, and I know their last leg was months after that.

I did for the first night of the tour. can't turn down all those goodies and a front row seat, plus a soundcheck experience with them, etc. Just really excited for the sets, as he's already said they're diving deep into their catalogue.

at the solo show 3 weeks ago, he took my requests for 1 song they rarely play anymore, opened with it actually (angel won't you call me) and then a long lost gem that has been played i think three times since 2011 (gymnast high above the ground)? Idk I'd have to look.

hoping that rolls into nice spread on the tour, but i'm really hoping for some fun sets for the brooklyn shows. their first three night stand since beacon 2011, i believe. big deal

    Don't think so.

They did. That tour in 2009, it was announced that they were doing it each night.

Some songs stuck around. In 2015, they did a ~6 song medley of it for encores or a midset run. Last night was the first time it's been performed in its entirety since 2009.

We noticed they didn't have setlist on the stage until they were about to rip into hazards of Love 2, and that's when we knew we were in for a special night. Thought they were opening the show with the 2015 medley.

    Such a cool experience. Gah

They record all shows from the soundboard but they do not sell them. They did a best of release from performances from their 2011 tour. There's five soundboards from 2005 that were sold through "Instant Live." Only other soundboards are from 02-03. To public knowledge at least...

They also played the Tain each night aside from Brooklyn n3, which is just a feat in itself. There's a AUD recording from Atlanta out there I know of. At least I think it's Atlanta

Fun weekends. They'll repeat the fest next year, per all language and all indication from the weekend. Should be fun to watch it grow.

What did they do to make it special apart from a normal concert?

    Re: The Decemberists

I mean the festival itself was cool. $60 to see two decemberists sets, shakey graves, head and the heart, belle and Sebastian, and sylvan esso...can't beat that price. It was at a brewery. They opened with a full band apology song, as the song is about Missoula. First full band performance since the last time in Missoula and rarely performed full band anymore. They did an encore song that was an old Tarkio song and had one of the other members of Tarkio play on it.

Cool, it's good that they are doing something to support where they came from.
