It's good so far. I'm taking it real slow and easing back into it. Slow and steady. I've lost a ton of strength and muscle so I'm basically starting over but I think I'm okay with that because it gives me a chance to go back and do some things differently.

Knee PT is rough. I messed up my knee several years back (still hurts from time to time) and had to do some PT on it. It's brutal. Best of luck to you in that. Keep up that perseverance.

As far as diet, I can really recommend two things: 1.) My Fitness Pal app, put in every single thing you eat, drink and do. It's tedious but it really opens your eyes to what you're eating and gives you some insight into your macros. It's helped me a ton in my diet. 2.) Meal Prep. This past week I made all 15 of my meals for this week on Sunday, put in the fridge and just warmed one up for every meal. It made a HUGE difference. Wasn't tempted to eat cereal for dinner or anything. Got a 4 oz turkey/pork/chicken and two vegetables at each meal. Made a huge difference in how I felt.

It does feel different but it's really great. Way more versatile in how you can attack the pecs that way. I almost exclusively do dumbbell for pecs. You can alter the bench incline and hit different parts of your muscle. Not to mention doing flyes and one arms.

What I'm about to say is very bro science:

Back when I started to become more serious about weightlifting, I learned to bench exclusively using dumbbells - this was because 1.) I usually didn't have someone to spot me 2.) being new to lifting, I was intimidated by the barbell and the guys using it. In one year I went from struggling with 45's to repping 95's. Since I've made the DB bench press a chest staple, I've developed larger, more rounded pectoral muscles than those who strictly use BB. Could it be due to the greater range of motion? Perhaps. The major drawback of using DBs is that most gyms only go up to 120lbs

I predominantly would use DB for chest. When I started, I was barely doing 30s and in 5 months I was telling 70s. It's nice when you switch it up for a day and you put 225 up on a barbell and you're like shit, that's awesome. Never will forget that feeling the first time I experienced it

Man, peeking in this thread every now and again has been tough as I'm recovering from back surgery. There was a time when I was playing college football when I could bench 395 and used to warm up with 225. Those were the days

There will never be a time when I lift that much again, but I can't wait to get back in the gym eventually. There's really no feeling like getting that solid pump on and leaving the gym feeling accomplished. Life has been totally different without it. No idea what the timeline is for being able to lift weights or what my limitations will be (obviously no deadlifts/squats anymore).

Thanks man! Just been walking around my neighborhood as much as possible, about 2 miles a day, and started doing some very, very basic static core work. I'm basically pain-free at this point but I definitely am not interested in rushing back too soon and rendering the surgery ineffective.

    how's the back holding up?

had my final follow-up with my ortho regarding my knee...they're gonna ween me off of PT over the next few weeks. My R leg still has some atrophy, but that might not come back for a while. they've been rehabbing my back, too, and it does feel better at times, but I feel really stiff in the back when lifting things up. I'm wondering if it's just because it's weak so it's constantly under strain.

I decided that once I get discharged from PT, I will be pushing myself more than ever to get back to the gym. I will also push myself throughout the work-outs and am really going to concentrate on certain things...especially my R leg atrophy.

    ^^

Thanks for checking in man. Back has been great. After my initial recovery of just walking around for a few weeks, I feel fantastic. I still get a little sore/stiff if I sit for too long, but I've been cleared to start PT and I've been doing more and more stuff at the gym. I finally got to lift some weights last week, albeit only machines and at a wayyyy lighter weight than I used to, but it felt so good to get back in there. I really do love lifting and I've missed it a lot. But holy SHIT are my muscles sore. I did chest on Thursday and I still can't shampoo my hair without wincing

Hoping the knee heals up soon :thumsbup

A very attractive, athletic looking girl stopped into the gym tonight trying to sell Gatorade's new protein/sport bars. After making small talk with her I took her business card and Googled her. Turns out she's not only a well known runner and former Olympic finalist, but she's the inspiration behind the Plain White T's song from a few years ago that everyone and their brother has heard, "Hey There Delilah". Small world

She is real cute. But i think that's cooler what all she's done. I mean at her age she's well known runner, Olympic finalist and has a very popular song about her. I mean I cooked my own dinner the other night and was pretty proud of that but she just puts me in my place.

    Need some thoughts:

Moved to Memphis and my old gym (that I really loved) has several locations in town. I can visit any of them, except they're all a solid 20-40 minute one-way drive away from where I work/live. And that doesn't include traffic, which will likely increase the time.

I have three options and need someone to weigh in on it.

Option 1.) Stay at my current gym and spend all of my time traveling there and back.

Option 2.) There's a Planet Fitness (yuck) about 3 minutes away. Pro: close and affordable. Con: It's Planet Fitness - enough said.

Option 3.) YMCA - my work provides a discounted membership with a YMCA that's about 5 min from work/10 from home. I wanna say it's $20/month for pool, basketball, weights, etc. Con: Not 24 hr

Option 3 is the right way to go right?

I love the YMCA. the big perk is you can also go to other ones. for the past 10 weeks ive been regularly using one that's closer to my work, instead of the one i actually belong to . could come in handy when youre visiting family or something

some YMCAs are significantly nicer than other ones so check it out first

Seems obvious, so I apologize if it's redundant, but are you switching up your workouts? We've talked ad nauseum in here about challenging your body, muscle confusion, etc. Try dropping reps and going higher weights if you want to feel really sore the next day; if you've been settling in the 10-15 rep range for a while now, going really heavy at 5-8 reps might make you feel a big difference.

I would often get in a little rut like you're feeling. I would Google, for example, "shoulder exercises" and scroll the results for any movement I've never done before or haven't done in a while, and then abandon all my traditional movements and do an "alternative" workout for that group for 2-4 weeks.

I was put on an antibiotic that falls in the class fluoroquinolone. Side effect is tendon rupture. With my history of plantar fasciitis and how it took so long to flare down, I am not risking doing anything until I'm like 15 days past taking this drug, though I'm sure the half life is shorter than 15 days. What a buzzkill.

I haven't been to a YMCA since I was a kid. I'll go check it out first. The only downside, and this is total tool on my behalf, is they don't have tanning. I was trying to get a good tan before I went on my honeymoon.

What's your guys approach to shoulders? I never can seem to FEEL it the next day, never am THAT sore. Routine suggestions?
Shoulders are probably my favorite day, so I'll give you my workout. Never tends to fail me.

Seated barbell shoulder press: 5 sets increasing the weight, 10, 8, 6, 4, then the fifth set I do 3 drops back to back to back from the heaviest weight down

    Barbell Shrugs: 5 sets increasing weight, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 then 3 consecutive drops sets

Side Raises: 5 sets of 10, increasing weight if necessary

Rotating single arm DB seated shoulder press. 5 sets of 10. Final sets drop 3 times until failure

My drop sets are with no rest, typically take about a minute and a half between all other sets tops. I'll incorporate other movements on occasion to switch things up but as long as I go hard on the first 3 exercises my shoulders are toasted the next day and the results are great.

    Re: Weightlifting

    Thinking about giving up weightlifting.

This shoulder/bicep injury is taking so long to heal and it seems every time I feel 100% and go for a light lift it still doesn't feel right. I tried to do a light chest lift on Saturday and I just didn't enjoy it like I used to. I've been thinking too that I don't know if I want to bulk up again either. It's so much work to maintain and buying protein and supplements, etc.

I've kind of enjoyed doing HIIT running and the more slender build I've got back to. Maybe I'll do some weight training like once or twice a week just to maintain some definition and strength.

It's funny you mention this. Ive been going over to the Muscular Development boards lately because of the Kevin Levrone comeback and saw a thread on this guy. It doesn't seem real.
