Re: No tour is good for DMB to skyrocket in 2018

DMB not touring doesn't do anything for them in 2018.
D+T playing stellar sets doesn't do anything to skyrocket the band whenever they return.
The only thing that will skyrocket the band is when/if they return, they actually play up to what they're capable of, which hasn't happened for how many years now? They just have too much shitty material and hide behind it for some reason. Also, their new music aside from Samurai Cop is boring and forgettable.

All IMO of course.

Agreed. I'm all for those sets. I've always thought this show other than the shake me closer is a great example of career spanning type show they should be playing regularly.

I haven't back read the thread; but, I read the initial post. How do any of you even have any glimmer of a hope for this band to ever do anything that lives up to even a shadow of what this band used to be? 2018 will come and go, there will be hype, there will be a couple decent shows, and 95% of them will suck. Give up now. It'll save you a lot of disappointment (sooner or) later.

I sort of agree. There will be some gold shows at SPAC, Alpine or the Gorge...maybe some of the others (Camden for example). Dave clearly gets psyched for certain venues...proven by things he says and set lists that get played. So there's hope for the loyal...you're just going to have to pick your shows, pay the bucks and travel to these venues. 80% of the shows will be bland, as it's the DMB machine going through it's summer tour motions. To this band's credit, they are holding up very well over time compared to most that flame out.

For fun, I read a thread or two from a Genesis board. I doubt it will be as bad with antsmarching.org, but talk about the depressing aftermath of following a band that's no more. It's one way to feel thankful for the tidbits of awesomeness we still get. Aaaah, the off year.

Odmb will decline until they either cut back on number of shows per tour or finally throw in the towel.

Mercy has seriously been declining in play over the past couple of tours. Only 8 plays last year.

No tour is good for...fans to focus their music listening on something else.

No tour is good for...Dave Matthews to write great music again.

No tour is good for...band members to experiment musically.

There isn't going to be any skyrocketing....ever.

The year off will be just that. But I mean I don't know what the future holds for DMB. Dave himself will be active.

Nobody really knows, especially the people who get defensive and say "uh they'll be back for sure in 2018"

Of course I had to catch it once. To be honest though, it was a really good version of Mercy. By far the best I've heard.

They come back fine if not there's nothing we can do. I've see them 16 years straight near 100 shows so I'm good for a while. I don't think an extended break would be bad.

For fear of sounding like I'm getting my hopes unrealistically up; 2018 is an opportunity this band will likely not have again to capture national attention. Another hit album, and induction to the rock hall of fame would be a hell of a platform to boost the return tour.

this is true for the most part but I enjoy the catalog being played by DMB (even in the current state) compared to D+T. I'll definitely enjoy the Mann shows this year but gimme full band over D+T anytime, even in the current forms.

    https://www.jambase.com/article/cult...crystal-garden

Found this article about an interview with Boyd. Boyd says, "It was a collective decision to just take next year off and then just be real people for a year, so we can come back fresh in 2018...but it will be that much sweeter when we come back."

2018 looks promising for DMB, but obviously nothing is official.

That isn't feasible. That lineup and era are long gone. Another 2013 is easily attainable if Dave wants it to be.

    I fully anticipate hearing

"Hey, where's the rest of the band?"

"What time does the real show start?"

"Is that Tim Reynolds? Man, they haven't played together since the 90's!"

"DAAAAAAAVE! I AINT NEVER HAD YOUR CORNBREADZZZZZ!"

    And my personal favorite:
"Where's the black dude that plays the sax?"

All accurate. I expect the lawn to be extra awful this summer because of this. People will be confused, then find out its not the full band, then will tune it out and just be getting reckless/hammered.
