Good, Free, Legal, Music

So, as someone who buys all my music, I'm always excited when I find a band that is releasing an album or live show for free, especially when it turns out to be good music. I thought it would be cool to have a thread specifically dedicated to posting/linking to some good, free, and legally released music that would normally go unnoticed by a lot of people.

What gave me the idea was a combination of Wilco releasing 2 live shows to benefit Haiti (make sure you donate if you download) and Magic Man's new album Real Life Color which I found out about from Berman's amazing blog.

So, if you know of some good albums or live shows that are being released for free download, let people know about it in here. Hopefully this will benefit people like me who buy their music, and the artists that are graciously putting their stuff out there for free.

Besides the 2 links above, here are a couple more free downloads I know about...

LeftRightLeftRight - Coldplay

DJ Moondance's Mash-Ups

Edit: Don't promote your own band, because they probably suck.

The Hood Internet. Couple guys from Chicago that mashup Popular rap over Indie beats of artists such as Bon Iver, Animal Collective, Cut Copy, Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio, My Morning Jacket, Hot Chip, Yeah Yeah Yeahs etc. Really great MASHUP. For fans of rap, indie, and Girl Talk. Great party music. All their stuff is free on the left column of their sites. Mixtapes 1-4 are particularly awesome (esp 3&4)

PS: The ladies loved me when I played this stuff on Friday. If you want sum, DL sum.

Isn't most of that stuff taper pulls though? Everything I've tried to get from there has been such shit quality I don't even bother keeping it.

Depends on the group. Ryan Adams, for example, is all soundboards. It also depends on how big taping is in the fan community. A band like Umphrey's McGee has tapers that are pretty serious and their tapes are usually quite good. Basically look for if the show has a good rating/high download count, and that means it's usually worth listening to. FWIW, I usually just stream, not download.

Top of the mornin' to ya sweetums. Are you guys down there supposed to get as much snow as we are up here? We're expecting like 12 inches and I'm not happy about it.

Ah, well that's cool. Well if people want to post some SDBs or other really good quality tapes they've found on there then that would be sweet. I'll check out some RA stuff later.

I'm breaking the rules and promoting my own band, (My Cousin, The Emperor), because we don't suck. This is our live record release show from Joe's Pub in NYC. I'm not actually IN this one, I manage them.

And just as proof we don't suck haha, we recently won the Independent Music Award for Best Alt-Country song, and have a positive review coming out in the next issue of Relix.

Great trip-hop music, he has 2 studio albums and a few live albums up and all of them are pretty legit. (Don't let my use of the word legit turn you away from this guy, he's damn good.)

Also, I have to vouch for Magic Man, Hood Internet, Super Mash Bros. and Girl Talk. All really good stuff.

also there are a lot of radio rips that are fantastic. my morning jacket has a few.

the best thing to do is only grab the shows with 4+ stars and comments that say "this quality is amazing" or something to that effect. its fairly easy, as they are typically the most downloaded shows for that group and show up on their top 5.

i can't listen at work to confirm, but i believe this is my favorite um show i got from there (in both quality of song and sound)

Do you idiots think buying music actually helps make more good music?

Buying music helps the music industry, thats it. Stealing an album and talking about it helps much more than buying an album and not.
