Not bad, not great, better than Ashes and Fire but not nearly as good as the circa 2005 output, but pretty good in its own right. Now about that album cover...
This so much. I love the alt country Ryan Adams. I think the Cardinals really helped accentuate that sound better than anyone else that ever played with him. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll hear another country-tinged album from him ever again. He's over it and more in the realm of LA singer-songwriter soft rock. It is what it is.

Someone really needs to send him back to Jacksonville, NC. I want another Jacksonville City Nights.

Excited to put on the album later, but I agree the elevator music sound of his latest stuff is unfortunate.

Think about it though, in 2003 he had written what, almost 120 country/altcountry songs in his career? You could feel him trying to move on creatively with RNR and LIH. The Cardinals kinda pushed him back to a more intricate classic rock/country style but even then he's already exhausted around 80 songs worth of ideas in that style. I don't blame him for reaching out to other styles, I hope this self titled is in the right direction. I can already tell I'm gonna like 1984 better though

I really like the new album. I do agree about missing the pedal steel, though.

By the way, does anyone have 48 Hours and Suicide Handbook? They got deleted from my hard drive accidentally a while back, and I can't find them anywhere.

Love "My Wrecking Ball" and a lot of the new record upon first listen. Would love some more harmonies and some pedal steel though...okay I guess I just miss The Cardinals.

Stopped in a local record shop today and behind the counter he had a stack of the new record. He warned no part of selling it to me early.

Still haven't listened to the new album because I've been without a computer for a few weeks...but I'm liking what I'm hearing for the most part.

Just picked up tix for both NYC shows! Can't wait!

The album sounds really loud on my (good) speakers. I had to adjust the volume down because it sounded all scratchy. Anyone else tihnk the album was mixed wrong? I listen to the new U2 album as well and that sounded incredible on it.

I've spun mine a few times, with speakers and now headphones, I think I sounds just fine. Have you tried cleaning it?

2 spins today. Not a very good album in general, but it's Ryan so I was groovin to it. A lot of repetitive concepts and ideas, but more interesting and genuine/soulful than Ashes & Fire.

I can see it growing on me. It's got a lot of horrible cliche lyrics and generic guitars, but so did III/IV and RNR and I love those albums. However it worries me that I can't pick out a standout song. I guess Shadows is cool but that's barely an Easy Tiger B-side IMO.

Looking forward to hearing 1984 for the first time.

I listened to the vinyl last night and I thought it sounded good. Exactly as I would have hoped it would sound in terms of technical sound quality. Side B had two spots that skipped even though I couldn't see any dust or dirt, so maybe I'll just have to try cleaning it a little harder. Other than that it was good.

P4k with a very spot on review of both releases. Probably a little more excited than I am. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was reminded of Bryan Adams and Bruce by this record

I like 1984 but they are definitely just sped up Cardinals songs

Finally got to listen to the album...well at least most of it. Definitely like it better than Ashes & Fire.

Has such a Love is Hell sound to me at some points (Kim, Trouble, Shadows).

It kinda sucks he lost sight of his alt-country roots for the most part, other than My Wrecking Ball I guess, but I'm just glad he's making music.
