Get some perspective. Without SU, there would have been no BW. And without that, the next album would not have happened. Etc.

There are no peaks without valleys. If they had called it quites before SU was done, and dave had gone back to just solo stuff, I think we would have missed out on a nice second coming that is taking shape for this band.

The past is past. Some folks have to let go of the 90s and realize that we don't live there anymore. And if it pains them so much, then rather than the band break up or call it quites, perhaps it is those fans who should call it quits. I think the band will keep on keeping on just fine if those fans stay or leave.

Some people want to put 1998 in a box and keep it forever. It's 11 years later folks. And if they had stopped evolving (in whatever direction) at that point, they would become an eventual parody of themselves and turn into a nostalgia act that did nothing but retread their first 3 albums and trot out like the Who or The Stones and just feed some red meat to the same audiences and charge higher ticket prices for doing it.

Nope. I'd rather see a little risk, a little change and a little variety. It may not all be perfection, but trying is better than sitting still and doing the same tricks over and over again.

I agree with this for the most part...
However, I think ML genuinely thinks the band can put out a better effort in making albums. And I think he's right. I don't think that he hates SU and Everday because they aren't carbon copies of the Big 3, but because they are obviously the worst attempts by the band to make a record. They've even stated this fact in documentaries.

A little risk and change is good, but I'd like to see the band actually put all of their effort into it and reach their potential. And for the most part, they did this with BW. As a fan, ML has every right to hate SU/ED because they display the worst efforts by the band.

That's basically what I was gonna put until I saw your post, so I'll just agree with you.

No one has to like everything the band puts out, but those who don't shouldn't attack someone who does.

He loves DMB, sounds like good taste to me!

a bit xtreme but if 'stand up' or 'whiskey' were the first (and only) dmb albums i ever heard, i surely wouldn't be a fan. i'm a fan because of the earlier albums and because the band is so damn good live. i'll continue to check out the new albums in the hope that dave regains his songwriting chops. but this writing by committee thing hasn't worked for me.

I don't know what other music you like so I didn't want to say that your taste in music in general sucks. But based on your rankings and comments I think that your taste in DMB music sucks. Just my opinion. Your taste in other music very may well be very good but I don't know.

    4. Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King
    5. Lillywhite/Busted Stuff
    6. Everyday
    7. Stand Up

After getting re-acquainted with the music after taking a "break" from the band after Everyday, I realize that my tastes have stayed the same with the usual "big 3" being at the top...BWGGK makes it "big 3+1" for me now. Finally fell for Busted Stuff after years of neglecting it...Everyday is great some days, and just too "popp-y" most other days. And man, I loved Stand Up when it first came out. Since then I've realized I was at point in my life that was particularly memorable, moreso than the album playing in my CD player during those times (SU.)

    Today I'd say:-

    1. Crash
    2. Under The Table and Dreaming
    3. Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
    4. Before These Crowded Streets
    5. Busted Stuff
    6. Everyday
    7. Stand Up

By tomorrow though only those in positions 1,5,6 & 7 would stay static as my preferences re UTTAD, BW and BTCS are constantly changing.

The Big 3 is cemented for me:
    1. Before These Crowded Streets
    2. Under The Table and Dreaming
    3. Crash

    The middle two:
    4. Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
    5. Busted Stuff

I'm ranking BWGK higher because I enjoy the Spaceman > Seven run more than any run on Busted Stuff. While I like every song on Busted Stuff, it doesn't flow, for me, like BWGK does. At one point I didn't like the disruption that LITHOG brings between Funny and Why I Am, but now I'm starting to move from the Alligator Pie camp lovers to the LITHOG camp lovers. That lowers Busted Stuff to 5.

As for the other two, I think Everyday is a complete album that's awful and Stand Up was a half-assed project that's awful. Over all, if Stand Up felt complete, I think it would be seen as a better album by most of the fan base. Being that I'm already in that camp, of course this is what follows (the bottom two):

    6. Stand Up
    7. Everyday

    1. BTCS- favorite album of all-time. Perfect from start to finish.

    2. UTTD- In my top 15 albums of all-time. Perfect from start to finish.

    3. Crash- In my top 15 albums of all-time. Perfect from start to finish.

    4. Busted Stuff- Wish this album was never released, they should of never messed with the epic event that was the Lillywhite Sessions.

    5. Big Whiskey-O.k. album, I am a little offended by all the religion bashing going on in the whole thing.

    6. Everyday- this album use to be tied for 7th, but has grown on my throughout the years, so I moved it up to 6th place.

    7. Stand Up- this album is garbage in my opinion. Love hello again live, but was trashed on this album. Bayou is alright, and don't mind steady as we go.

    3. Big Whiskey- A very good album IMO.
    4. UTTAD- People will bitch how UTTAD has to be top 3 but it doesn't really do too much for me.
    5. Busted Stuff/LWS- Good collection of songs, LWS should have been released.
    6. Everyday- No where else to put this.
    7. Stand Up- Garbage.

    BTCS- Still perfection
Crash- Great sound, defines DMB IMO
(These 2 are far, far above any other album by the band)

Busted Stuff/LWS- Great songs. No other way to put it.
UTTAD- BOWA and #34 are perfect studio cuts, I prefer everything else live
Big Whiskey- Haven't listened to the album in a long time, I still think it's pretty solid and gets underrated by a lot of people here.
Everyday- Some good songs, some shit songs
Stand Up- I really like maybe 2-3 songs from this album (AB, YMDT live w/ Tim, HA if we're counting it as a SU song and not an 04 song) other than those it's pretty bad

Re: my personal ranking of BW among DMB albums

    1. Under the Table and Dreaming
    2. Big Whiskey
    3. Crash
    4. Before These Crowded Streets
    5. Busted Stuff
    6. Stand Up
    7. Everyday
(Where do we rank Some Devil?) Think I'd put that one at #6 just in front of Stand up and everyday

    2. Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
    3. Under The Table and Dreaming
    4. Busted Stuff
    5. Crash

Even though his post is correct. I personally never had a problem with him, but I guess people who think DMB is as good now as they were in the '90s wouldn't like him very much.

Re: my personal ranking of BW among DMB albums

I think it is more proper to list DMB albums in Studio and Live:

    Live:
    Before These Crowded Streets
    Crash
    Busted Stuff/Lillywhite Sessions
    Big Whiskey
    Under The Table and Dreaming

    Studio:
    Crash
    Big Whiskey
    Before These Crowded Streets
    Busted Stuff
    Stand Up

Stand Up songs live are so much better live. The quality on Before These Crowded Streets sounds older than Crash.

    1. UTTAD
    2. BTCS
    3. Crash
    4. LWS/Busted Stuff
    5. Big Whiskey (If there was more Roi, Boyd, and Jams on this record... aka "that pace" song, etc. I could see BW jumping up a spot or two, but DMB was logistically and emotionally limited by Roi's death. Regardless, it's a beautiful and well-constructed record)

    6. Everyday

    7. Stand Up
