my personal ranking of BW among DMB albums

Here's the order of favorites for me personally:

1 Crash (a perfect album, by any band anywhere)
2 Big Whiskey (for the sheer joy it brings to me listeing to it)
3 Lillywhites (for the epic darkness)
4 Everyday (DMB does a pop album better than anything pop at the time)
5 Under The Table (still classic, but something is missing - new track order, one of the cut songs from the sessions... something - that makes it uneven for me. Sorry)
6 Before These Crowded Streets (damn near everything on here is better live than in the studio. Not to say that the studio work isn't fine, but what these songs became is better than what is on record.)
7 Busted Stuff (few improvments over the original versions - and the worst DMB song every in WAYG)

7 Stand Up. (it was OK at the time, but does not hold up.)

as for "abosolute #1 in sixth spot" - well, that's why I prefaced the whole thing with "personally". I am sure you have a "personally" opinion too. And that can encompass "absolute #1" in your PERSONAL opinion.

    and.... what's "ture"?

    1. BTCS-perfection.
    2. Crash- The first DMB album I heard and what got me into the band.
    3. Big Whiskey- A very good album IMO.
    4. UTTAD- People will bitch how UTTAD has to be top 3 but it doesn't really do too much for me.
    5. Busted Stuff/LWS- Good collection of songs, LWS should have been released.
    6. Everyday- No where else to put this.
    7. Stand Up- Garbage.

ok then, let me say that - personally - I think you have poor taste in music if you rate Everyday above UTTAD and BTCS.

I listened to UTTAD recently, and I really did not dig its production/sound editing all that much. All of its songs are gold live, but the studio album is not what I remembered it being. Everyday, on the other hand, surprised and impressed me quite throughly when I listened to it this afternoon.

woww we have different taste. ha respect your opinion, but disagree. Here's mine:
    1. Crash (flawless)
    2. BTCS (everything is better live, but incredible studio too)
    3. UTTAD (to me, nothing's missing. classic DMB)
    4. Lillywhite/BS (great album, not incredible, but great)
    5. Big Whiskey (has its ups and downs, also great album)
    6. Everyday (just a good album. best "pop" album I own, but im not really a pop person)
    7. Stand Up (no comment.)

    Tier 1:
    1. Before These Crowded Streets
    2a. Crash (tie)
2b. Under the Table and Dreaming (tie)

    Tier 2:
    4. Busted Stuff (why no love for BS on the forums???)

    Tier 3:
    5. Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
    6. Stand Up

    Tier 4:
    7. Everyday

I argue that Stand Up is better musically than Big Whiskey, but lyrically is atrocious. Big Whiskey only gets the nod over Stand Up because there is more energy on the album.

i like your approach only thing i'd flip-flop tier 3 & 4. in fact for me 'everyday' is almost like a new dmb cd. couldn't stand it at the time but gave it a listen after my disappointment w/whiskey and for the most part 'appreciate' it. obviously very poppy but at least they're fully realized, well crafted songs as opposed to the trainwrecks on 'stand up' & 'whiskey'.

no one mentions 'remember 2 things' - not an 'official' release and the production is weak. but seek up, osw, jane, back u up etc. i wish dave could approach that level of songwriting now ...

    Good call.

Actually, I find it funny that someone says "you have poor taste in DMB music." Not in music, but DMB music.

All the music is made by DMB. And I do not hate any of it. Some seem to hate some of it over other music.

Personally, I love DMB and can respect and appreciate everything they do. It reflects variety and a capacity to try new things and show different sides of themselves as musicians. Is it always going to be perfect? Well, that depends on someone's taste.

A person could put on BTCS and hit random, and hear Halloween first as the first and only DMB song they ever hear. I dare say that as an entry point, it would misinform that listener as to what DMB are and sound like. And it might turn them off to the band forever.

I think you have to weigh a wide range of songs by the band to make an honest judgement. And those who curse or demonize people for loving certain albums and songs just because it does not conform to their particular taste. There is a rude sort of vile prejudice that comes with that sort of narrow thought that would want to dictate to everyone else what is good based on their opinion. Dare I say that in society we see this sort of thing happen with things like the KKK or the Nazi party or other dictatorial set ups, where thier belief and ONLY their belief is celebrated and attempts to silence anyone against that belief become a driving force.

Dare I say that that mentality is against everything that DMB and their music would espouse.

That's an extreme example, but I'm sure the KKK started with a handful of narrow minded dudes sitting in a room and bitching about people who didn't fit their belief system.

As to the music itself.... my choice of ranking albums is based as much on songs as it is the whole album.

My top twenty list of songs would read something like this (and in no particular order):

#41, You Never Know, So Much, So Right, Shake Me Like A Monkey, Fool To Think, You and Me, Crush, Stay, Tripping Billies, Grey Street, Steady as We Go, What Would You Say, PNP Rapunzel (in live form only), Big Eyed Fish, Bartender, Seven, Sweet Up and Down (live only) and Joyride (live only).

As you can see, the spread of songs over albums makes it hard to pick a dominant album out the of the pack.

Yes, I think CRASH is one of the most perfectly put together albums of all time. It is about as seamless as you can ask for in an album. It flows from open to close smoothly and I never feel the need to skip over a song. The mood shifts, but it flows. BTCS does not do that. It has some masterful compositions, but I never listen to the studio Halloween, and unless I am in a specific mood for it, the end of the album sags for me. If I am in the mood for it, it is pure bliss. But if you have to be in a certain mood to enjoy a given album does that not put an asterisk next to it in "personal" ranking? I skip around on UTTAD, I skip a couple of tracks on ED (the early leaked song order was better over all), I skip quite a bit on SU, I don't skip much on BW, though I can pass LITHOG and Baby Blue most of the time.

So based on that assessment, I made my choices.

I refuse to conform a blind allegance to BTCS, just because of a majority of dictaoral opinions. If it works for you every single time you play it, then bravo to you. If you feel that way about ED or SU, then bravo to you too. I won't brand you or make you wear a Scarlett "A" or a star of David to single you out for that choice. I may not get it, but why the fuck should it bother me?

And as long as whatever album or song you like keeps the band going, shouldn't that be a good thing?

Not IMO. I would have rather had the band call it quits than put out more albums like SU.
