Well, I asked her not to tuck in my bed and my buddy wanted to be tucked. She couldn't get right. Plus she threw away an important piece of paper my buddy had some info written down on. No tip for her.

Only if on an extended stay, like on a Caribbean vacation. If it's 1-2 nights, and especially if I'm staying in the States, then no. But those people on the tropical islands work really hard, and they need the $10-20 a lot more than I do.

Re: Spinoff: Do you tip housekeepers at hotel?

I'm in one right now but it is just for 1night and we basically just needed a bed and I won't tip but when I was in Mexico for 5 nights in February, I left money every day so she would take care of us. It was a bigger room and stuff to clean and since it was a 400 a night room, I wanted it kept spotless. So I guess it depends. I have tipped on a one night if with the kids and it was kind of a mess. Of course, After typing this now, I feel like I should leave a couple of bucks.

Generally, if they are courteous and do a nice job cleaning up and making sure everything is stocked, yes I leave a little cash upon leaving.

One night stays for road trips or other things, I usually do not.

I generally always leave a couple bucks, more if it's a longer stay or I've left a mess. They are cleaning up my shit and preparing a room which was used by thousands to seem like it's never been touched before (all for crap pay).

How much I give them depends on how well they did during my stay.

Can somebody tell me whether or not these employees get paid less and depend on tips to make up the difference?

They make less than the Bellman that more people tip or your hairdresser.

Typically it's minimum wage for a thank less job. Also the most hard working job in the hotel.

Ok, my point is that they aren't a "tippable" employee (I'm assuming people understand what I mean when I say "tippable"), thanks.

If they were I may have changed my behavior, but as somebody above said, this thread is the first I've heard that people do this at all.

I guess I don't know what a "tippable" employee entails.

I'd rather tip the person who scrubbed my shit stains off the toilet than someone who cut 2 inches off my hair or carried my luggage to the room.

I think most people don't think about tipping a housekeeper because they don't see or interact with them.

Like a waiter who makes $2.19 and has to make up the difference in tips, as I said above.

Gotcha. No they don't survive on tips. It's more of a courtesy/respectful thing. Like tipping your barber or massage therapist.

As I stated before, this person is cleaning up my shit (literally at times) I can throw down a few bucks and put a smile on their face.

Courtesy I can see... sure. I don't think it's disrespectful to not tip them though. Seems obvious that not many people do.

We should be doing away with tipping, not expanding the concept. It is demeaning, as many people think of it as charity, even when the business is getting away with paying the person $2 an hour. It is the responsibility of the hotel to pay their employees a liveable wage. What are you paying for the room for? I worked for tips for years and always tip good in social circumstances that call for it, but we should be doing less tipping in society and more paying our employees better for the jobs they do. If that means raising the prices fine, but at least they wouldn't be reliant upon a custom not everyone understands or cares to understand.

Re: Spinoff: Do you tip housekeepers at hotel?

At low end corporate deals (Motel 6, Days Inn, HoJo, etc.) no, I do not tip. Most of the time the room is not clean when I check in. If it is, and the maid did something for me, like extra towels, etc., or I stay more than a night, I do tip like $5.

At upmarket places, I tip consistently.

In either case, they are wage slaves but, to be fair, they are paid at least minimum.

In Vegas someone in our suite puked all over the place, like from the hallway to the bathroom. We made him tip the cleaning crew (yup, there were like 5 people there) $100. Nobody should have to clean that shit up except the one who dealt it, but he was a rich, spoiled fuck. When they all got $20s, it seemed to perk their day up a little.

EDIT: My grandfather used to leave loose change around, but he knew the exact amount. On long stays, if the change was still there, he would always tip 10x whatever the change was, usually about 10 bucks, leaving a note and thanking them for their honesty. In most cases, however, the change would be gone.

Just curious. Do you support a higher minimum wage?

Yes, especially if I am staying more than 1 night or the room is messier than average when leaving. I find it a lot easier to tip people that work hard for their money and aren't compensated very well for it. I find it especially easier to tip someone that is cleaning a room versus a waitress with poor service that absolutely expects a good tip just because it's standard.

No, unless I'm with a large group and we make a big mess, something beyond the ordinary changing of sheets/towels/etc.
