those sports are so accessible for kids to learn and grow up loving. there was only one high school that had a hockey team in my area that i knew of. even D1 colleges only have like 60 teams in the country compared to 128 football teams, which are 3 times the size, and over 300 basketball teams.

to play hockey, or to grow up racing, you really had to just be lucky enough to be born in the right place and under the right circumstances, like having parents who could afford the hobby. maybe i could have been a great racer, but i was never in a position to have he opportunity to find out. a lot of my interest in nascar came from my dad, who was an earnhardt sr fan. and with hockey, i have the penguins AHL team 25 minutes away from home since i was like 10. those were my access points, which a lot of people don't have, even for how basic they are.

sports in general need to do a better job at getting kids interested, and a lot of that comes from making it accessible for families to actually be able to take their kids. for avalanche games, seats that are center ice in the upper level at $60 a piece. doesn't matter if you're 5 or 50, you pay $60. i know a lot of teams like chicago and detroit dont have trouble selling out, but a lot of people can't afford to go. it would be almost $300 after fees for a family of 4 just to buy decent tickets for hockey game. even sitting in the upper level corners would be $150, not to mention parking and food.

make the sports more accessible to everyone and they'd be able to build a larger following nation wide. i know some people who were never interested in hockey until they saw their first game in person and then realized what a great sport it in. just need to find a way to give more people that chance to experience it.
Great post by lockman and this is a very good post as well. I have never put put on ice skates. I played a ton of baseball, football and especially basketball as a kid. But I was taken to my first Islander game at 11 years old. It was a playoff game in the deciding game of the first round series vs the Rangers and I was hooked. It soon became my favorite sport and by the age of 14, I was working all summer to afford to pay for half season tickets to the Islanders.

I have never played hockey and neither have my kids and they likely never will. I feel bad, too, that we have yet to go an Islanders game or even a Yankee's game as a family. But if I ask them if we should spend $300 or $400 to go a 3 hour sporting event or an overnight stay at great wolf lodge for the same price, they are gonna choose great wolf every time and they should. A lot more bang for the buck. We've been to the Islander minor league team here in Connecticut and the local independent league pro baseball team is always a fun time and they make it kid friendly but it might be a while before we get to a pro game. I would like to get to a Yankees game this year. I occasionally look on stub hub for cheap seats on a day we can go so I think we will try and go this year. I mean it's not like I can't afford it unlike many families. They just aren't huge baseball fans to begin with as far as watching the game unlike say football so why spend the money when it doesn't mean the world to them to go unlike when I was a kid and couldn't wait to go see Mattingly and company as the Stadium. I am taking the plunge this year and we will be traveling to an NFL game this year finally. Schedule maker was a little better this year.

    Lot of good posts.

This one stands out to me though because it doesn't mention soccer. Every kid plays soccer growing up just like basketball or football. For that reason, I don't believe it is a fringe sport in America. It has easily been the fastest growing sport in the US over the last decade.

It's not just ESPN covering Tebow. One of the sideline reporters for the Braves went over to Rome a couple weeks ago because Tebow was playing there and she reported from the stadium. He's one of the most popular athletes in America.

From what I can tell, espn having no part of hockey is the best thing for hockey fans.

NBC has done a great job putting games on all their networks for us come playoff time. I don't see that happening with the network formerly known as the worldwide leader in sports.

If the NHL EVER signed a broadcasting rights agreement that would allow any of their playoff games to not air nationally then they are pretty dumb-dumb. NBC doesn't just say generally, "we want the NHL" and then gets to randomly choose whether they air playoff games or not. The number of overall games shown in a season, stipulations that all playoff games are aired, and a number of very specific details about what is going to be broadcast and when are agreed upon.

Its just social media saying. People say it in regards to tons of stuff. It basically just means "be aware", "stay on top of it" or "keep an eye on it" talking about some specific topic. It probably started with conspiracy theory people on twitter but its always used kind of sarcastically now, especially in sports.

I haven't watched The 6, but I know what Jemele Hill is like, and I know how arrogant and unlikable Michael Smith is, so I can only imagine the trainwreck of bullshittery that takes place on it. And along with the rest of the #woke world, I can't fathom how she and Stephen A. Smith still have jobs.

there were three reasons I stopped getting the Orlando Sentinel. She is one of the reasons; I thought she was a very very poor writer.

She doesn't have a broadcast voice; she doesn't have great presentation; her opinions are predictable.

So is Jemelle Hill good at her job? I don't think so.

She's loud, basically that's all it takes to get ahead in the field now.

I know Twitter is the barometer (I guess?) with my generation, but it blows my mind how hard companies such as ESPN bend over backwards to clearly appeal to a race that makes up like 13% of the population. Is it white guilt? Probably, but I think older people just assume everyone under 30 acts the same. Reminds me of r/fellowkids.

SC6 is clearly a black, hip hop themed show. How is that going to attract anyone over 30 and not black? Fwiw, I love Gucci and Outkast so it's not like I'm some honky who just listens to Kenny G. It's like if you had a sports show that's hippie themed with Steal Your Faces and Dead lyrics everywhere That appeals to like 2% of the population.

They have gone so far left they are parading their white guilt like it's nothing.

Said it before, but I wish they would let him go so FOX could pick him up and he can go back to his old self. Paul's show is very unique he has a cult following. He ain't going anywhere.
