How a Dave Matthews Band Show Inspired An App That Lets Fans Request Setlists

http://www.billboard.com/articles/bu...-request-songs

Best part of the article:
"At the end of the show we were like, 'Man, he didn't play any of the songs that we wanted to hear, that kind of stunk,'" Tepper remembers. "Like, they didn't play 'Crash Into Me' and I was like, man, that's mine and my girlfriend's favorite song. She's pissed right now! Obviously, Dave can do anything he wants -- he's a legend, an icon. But we just thought it would be cool if the fans could have their voice be heard by the artist."

Interesting. I wonder how much it's used by it's member artists?

This is interesting but I highly highly doubt 95% of artists care enough to use something like this.

and too right. why should a bunch of moany geezers choose the set? even if 5% of the crowd puts down exactly the same setlist, you could be annoying 95% of the crowd by playing that music. yes us on here would love LIOG>Stone>YNK>JTR>Monkey Man, but why should a tiny proportion of the fanbase dictate the show?

I did a survey a while back, and surprisingly Ants and the dMbFamily both came pretty close on sets.

Because those songs are good music...And Seven, Shake Me, You & Me, etc are not. Haha

I think it's rude to demand certain songs are to be played. I get that as a paying customer you should get what you want but when I buy a ticket to a sporting event the team I am rooting for doesn't always win.

Also doesn't an artist know what songs their fans like? They must hear crowd reactions to songs. Also couldn't they use data like iTunes downloads or Spotify plays to figure out what tunes are popular?

Satellite gets some of the lowest reaction out of any song in their catalog and they havent stopped playing it ever.

It got the least reaction all night at blossom last week.

Not this app and not the whole set list, but I have seen Big Head Todd and the Monsters keep a PC on stage and every once in awhile look into a chat room or something and take a one off request.......I thought that was cool.

Best way to do it is to have 3 options on the giant screen after each song. Example:

    A.) Crash Into Me
    B.) Where Are You Going
    C.) Seven.

Have Stefan read the options to the crowd and get a little noise crowd meter like they do at hockey games, whatever song has the loudest crowd wins. Do that 20 or so more times and theres your set.

I think even those people generally know what the better tunes are and, if they were writing a setlist, would pick them. The difference comes in where people here will straight up say "SMLAM fucking sucks, don't play it." and the Fam will say "I love EVERY song Dave's ever done!!"

Its just hilarious this was inspired by people who didnt hear the bands most popular song at a show. Did these guys think they dont play crash regularly? Would make alot more sense if it was something like "diehard fans get inspired to build app to show artist what deep cuts they really want to hear" or something similar.

This is just hilarious. I can't imagine this actually happening. It would sure be a riot though!

"The #1 most voted song by DMB fans was something called 'Phone Book.'"

Have Stefan read the options to the crowd and get a little noise crowd meter like they do at hockey games, whatever song has the loudest crowd wins. Do that 20 or so more times and theres your set.
There's a set at Umphrey's annual UMBowl show that's not too different from that. Before the set 3 options are placed on the screen and fans text in their pick and you see a live percentage meter for each option. Then towards the back half of whatever song is played the screen shows a "what should the band do next?" screen with a few options and text voting, and it's repeated until the set is over. It's a fun & different gimmick but having it be a regular thing, or even for an entire show would be tiresome imo. I support increased fan involvement where appropriate, but the surprise element from the artist themselves is still a huge thrill that shouldn't go away.

what i want to know is how did guys with an idea that has a pretty good chance of not really working (considering acts that dont take suggestions or have their own ways already0 already have backing from bud light and madison square garden when the damn app hasnt even officially launched yet?

seriously, i want to know how this happens.

crash was only played 4 times all of 2015, but still, go to like any other show and you'll get it. they still got ants, wwys, jimi, and ddtw as far as old classics go. not like there was nothing good.

Most bands /musicians play literally the same set every show and are on the road with studio musicians that practice those songs. Some acts simply wouldn't be able to stretch their catalogue in that manner.
As far as those that do switch it up, dmb, phish, the dead, petty ect.that would be pretty cool. But as far as dmb is concerned Dave for the most part, doesn't care. He is gonna play what he wants whether you have signs or vote on an app. Oh, maybe you'll get a solo tease.

at philly, dave and tim played spoon and pig because of a sign a guy had on night 1, but thats generally the most you'll get from dave taking suggestions. its not going to be something that gets busted out that night right then and there. maybe it'll come out the next night, or maybe next week. dave needs time to knock off the rust before he pulls it off the shelf.

Exactly, just like Dreamgirl in London this year. Some (douchey) guy kept screaming for it N1, and N2 it was played
