Best of DJM vs Best of....

...Thom Yorke

I know Radiohead is highly regarded around these boards. I have really been getting into them lately as well.

So who has written the best lyrics: David J. Matthews or Thom Yorke?

Poll coming.

But honestly dude? Like anywhere else I get this, but on a Dave Matthews fan board? Can you honestly expect fair, unbiased results?

I am a fan of both, but Dave easily trumps Thoms lyrics (if we're disregarding all the crap he's put out, lol).

Wow, I'm surprised. I've always though dave was better, but I remember a thread a while ago about better lyricists that dave. People repeatedly mentioned Thom.

Thom has become a much better lyricist than Dave, but that wasn't always the case.

At their best, they're completely different lyricists. But now, the difference is that Thom's lyrics haven't absolutely sucked for the entirety of the 21st century.

    exactly.

eraser lyrics > some devil lyrics

essentially, post-lws, thom became a master and dave became...well, above average.

I love Thom's ability to paint a detailed, haunting picture with his lyrics.

I'm listening to The Gloaming now... the lyrics combined with the music are just so incredibly vivid. Dave hasn't done something like this since The Dreaming Tree or Spoon.

Dave has painted a very vivid picture of a hole that goes all the way to China.

And it rained all night and washed the filth away
    Down New York airconditioned drains
The click click clack of the heavy black trains
    A million engines in neutral

The tick tock tick of a ticking timebomb
    Fifty feet of concrete underground
One little leak becomes a lake
Says the tiny voice in my earpiece
So I give in to the rhythm
    The click click clack
I'm too wasted to fight back
Tick tack goes the pendulum on the old grandfather clock

    I can see you
But I can never reach you

And it rained all night and then all day
The drops were the size of your hands and face
The worms come out to see what's up
We pull the cars up from the river

    It's relentless
    Invisible
    Indefatigable
    Indisputable
    Undeniable

So how come it looks so beautiful?
How come the moon falls from the sky?

    I can see you
But I can never reach you

    I can see you
But I can never reach you

this lyrics...in the context of the music/with the feel of the song. are. a.m.a.z.i.n.g

This gets very tough when comparing their best work, because both Dave and Thom have some brilliant, brilliant lyrics. It gets much easier when you look at their worst; Yorke has never written any lines that make me groan, but lately, Dave has written dozens.

Nope. It sucks. I saw the error of my ways by the end of the week. Too bad, too, because it's a cool riff and a nice melody it probably could've been.

    Yeah it does suck.

Also, Thom could very well write songs with shitty lyrics, but has the sense not to put them on a CD. Whereas Dave writes songs, and whether or not the lyrics suck or are great, he has people like Batson who splooge all over the place no matter the level of genius and puts out any song.

Basically, I want to believe that Dave is just as good lyrically as Thom. Thom is a haunting lyricist, Dave is and can be more mesmerizing, for me. Fuck, Thom is the shit.
