Re: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows (11.19.10 / 7.15.11)

The moment in this latest trailer where Voldemort's got Harry right in front of him and he appears tightly tied up with something and he gives the "because I've got something worth living for" line -- that's gotta be exclusive to the film, yea? I just went back thru most of book 7 not all that long ago and I don't recall any point where Harry's tied up like that and in Voldemort's possession (plus it kinda looked like they were standing within one of the Hogwarts towers).

^ yeah i dont remember that. i was thinking it could be a dream. i dont see a situation in which voldemort could literally be holding him by the collar until harry sacrifices himself at the end

So I found this which I think is pretty cool, some hardcore fan went thru the entire trailer and using the annotations, he stops on each new scene for a few seconds and explains which part of the movie the shot(s) is from, with it either being very obvious, or at least educated guesswork by the user here and general fan conversation he's seen online.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpqT0WK358w

He did it for the previous trailer as well.

Woah. That was verrrrry informative. What's sad tho is it makes you realize how practically every major event in the book is at least flashed by you in that trailer. I was loving it; now I feel like I've seen everything and have nothing to look forward to, lol

I love that they are breaking it down into two parts. Shoulda been done with Order of The Pheonix. That book was way to big to be 1 movie.

Actually the way I'd always heard it, back before the adaptation for that was getting started they were giving serious consideration to making OOTP 2 films.

It honestly should have been done, 800 pages is too big of source material for 1 movie. I mean think about condensing an 800 page book down into a 140-150 page script. It just doesn't work out, i think that is why that movie seems so discombobulated and bumpy. 800 pages into 300 pages is much more doable IMO.

I think 5 & 7 need it the most. Yates did a great job with 6. It is my favorite movie out of the series so far. i haven't seen 4 in ages so i can't comment on it.

Theoretically yes, it could of have been, especially when you simply look at the fact that it was the longest book in the series. BUT, I think they ultimately went the correct route in keeping it just one film (as much as I think it was probably the weakest of the series), just given the nature of the story, book 7 was much more suited for split films than book 5, given the narrative structure and everything.

I mean try to take as objective a view at it as you can, consider the overall story they had to tell in OOTP, I just don't see that very naturally turning into two legitimate feature films, with a meaningful break in the middle. It's very much the opposite case with Hallows. And I mean yea, is the idea of 2 films financially motivated? Yes, OBVIOUSLY. And very significantly, and in the end I'm okay with that, because I sincerely believe it was creatively motivated as well (even if that's the lesser of the two reasons, which it is) and I'd still rather we get a good 5hrs+ of a movie, so...

sorry, I'm probably totally butchering the point I'm trying to make and sound like I'm speaking rubbish

okay wow, I definitely have come to consider myself a Potter nerd (even though I didn't actually start with the books until just after 7 came out), but looking over that video.... damn, even I'm not that much of a Potter nerd.
I mean, on one hand I enjoy a lot of the (even in depth) analysis of the trailer, but listening to those dudes at some moments, I just kinda wanted to bitch slap them

EDIT: although I'll tell ya, it is pretty cool, I just realized earlier we're only a full 4 months now away from part 1!

Actually your reasoning makes perfect sense. And the more i think about it there really isn't a good place to split the 5th book in half. The 7th is full of action and things of that nature to split it in half in a number of places. I have a hunch of where the first movie will end, but there are numerous spots where they could do it.

There's something I've been wanting to ask fellow fans for a long time about Goblet, and I can't find the general Potter thread right now so I'm putting it here. And this probably isn't necessary, but I'll spoiler it for the hell of it (as it deals with the main reveal at the end).

i watch Chamber the other day and i thought about that, cuz Harry and Ron changed back in like half an hour (movie time). Bartie would have had to drink gallons per day

    Kevin-

In Goblet, there are a few instances when Snape mentions how someone has been stealing from his stores, his "cabinets" and such. And if memory serves he even slyly suggests that it's ingredients for ployjuice potion *cue accusing look at Harry*. This should come up around the gillyweed incident. Because as we know, Dobby steals the gillyweed from Snape.

I Just started the first book yesterday. This is the first time i have read it in quite some time, and i must say after just finishing the 7th book a number of weeks ago you can tell a noticeable difference in J.K.'s writing style. I don't remember the first book having tongue in cheek moments with the narration. All the same i am fully enjoying the first book and should be done with it in a couple of days.

Since we're asking "how is it ...?" questions, here's one from DH:

When we get the Regulus Black story (his getting the locket and replacing it with a dummy) how is it that the basin on the island in the cave gets filled back up with Voldemorts potion that Dumbledore drinks in HBP?

i think he knew this, but was alluding to the fact that Snape or whoever must have had some incredible stores of ingredients..if Harry and Ron changed back within an hour and the potion took a month to make, Bartie had to have been stocking up for a couple years to have enough to last an entire school year. it just doesnt seem plausible
