Re: Rank the Big Whiskey Songs

It keeps changing so no disrespect to the bottom half of the list...

    Squirm
    Lying in the Hands
    Spaceman
    Seven
    Cockadile
    Monkey, Shake me like a
    Time Bomb
    Why I Am
    Funny the Way It Is
    Dive In
    Baby Blue
    You and Me

To me, Alligator Pie is a blessing - having this song out now almost guarantees me that I'll never hear Bayou again that song got really old really quick to each his own tho, more power to the Bayou lovers

You know come to think of it I would be interested in a poll of "What do you prefer Bayou or Alligator Pie?"
Anyone wanna help me start a poll on that? I'm not sure how you do it

That is funny, I remember when Bayou was good, untill they played it at every single show I went to and released it on all the weekend at the rocks cd's and then I was sick of it. Yay for GATOR PIE!

That was my problem I saw a bunch of shows in 05-06 and heard it at almost every show I went to. Then they did the un-dmb like thing of playing it back to back nights when I saw them in Charlottesville in 06. I was done at that point.

Re: Rank the Big Whiskey Songs

I have to preface this list by saying that this was very hard and the songs are interchangable...that's just the way it is. But this is how I feel right now...

1 Shake Me Like A Monkey (this song is an INSTANT ASS SHAKER!)
2 Time Bomb (sounds so much like it could be from the Lillywhite's-especially the very beginning)
3 Seven (love this fucking song!!!)
4 Baby Blue (this song is BEAUTIFUL and can be interpreted any way you damn well please!)
    5 Why I Am
    6 Dive In
    7 Spaceman
8 Funny the Way It Is
9 Lying in the Hands of God
    10 Squirm
    11 Alligator Pie
    12 You and Me

ARGGGHHHH!!!! I can't do this, guys...Seriously...you should see the paper I'm ranking on...messy!!! And I still am not sure about my list!

Re: Rank the Big Whiskey Songs

Okay, adopting the tier philosophy. here goes.

    Tier 1:

Squirm: I seriously cannot listen to this song only once in my car. The only Big 3 songs in this category for me are The Stone, Ants, LIOG, and Billies.
LITHOG: Great, great song. Just great. The new Proudest Monkey IMO.

Tier 2: Time Bomb: I think if the band had taken Roi's advice "[the pace riff] should be the chorus, and something else should be the verse", the song would have been top DMB of all time. As it stands, this song is very interesting and fresh for me in a DMB perspective.
Baby Blue: Great, great song. It's only tier 2 because it's not The Stone's little brother, ala Squirm. The best soft song DMB has put out to date.
Why I Am: Perhaps the "catchiest' song the band has ever produced. This song is great. "When my story ends it's gonna end with him, heaven or hell..."...the only complaint about the song is that I wish Carter would hit the pedal every syllable of "heaven or hell". Nearly perfect.

    3. Shake Me Like A Monkey
    4. Time Bomb
    5. Grux
    6. Seven

    10. You & Me
    11. Why I Am
    12. Baby Blue

    4. Squirm
    5. Time Bomb
    6. Alligator Pie
    7. Seven
    8. You & Me
    9. Funny The Way It Is

I love all of the songs, no doubt.

I wish that Tim had a more prominent riff in Why I Am, and Dave's voice was more gruff (like it is live)...

Someone please tell me Squirm studio is not "Big 3" quality. It would really boggle my mind.

    My list!

Lying in the Hands of God
    Shake Me Like a Monkey
    Squirm
    Alligator Pie
    Spaceman
    Dive In
    Time Bomb
    Why I Am
    Funny the Way It Is
    Seven
    You & Me
    Baby Blue

I'm surprised people haven't ranked Alligator Pie higher, I think it's an amazing song...but it is similar to Louisiana Bayou (very little similarity in my opinion but the similarity is there). It just haunts everyone's minds thinking back to something on Stand Up I guess

It's so hard to rank these songs except for the first three in my list because those songs are perfect...the rest are so close in quality that I have trouble ranking them. I love every single song on this album with Baby Blue being slightly lower than the others.

I'm curious -- what does this have that The Stone doesn't? It might have fewer verses and more repetition at the end, but the structure of The Stone makes it so only about half of a Squirm verse has as many lyrics as a whole Stone verse...

I need to wait a while before I can rank them . . . I just can't, yet. I could probably put them in a top half/bottom half order, but that's about it. Such a good album.

Hey, you curious little piiiiig..., First off, I don't really know why you're questioning me about it, I was more or less ripping on "funny" even DMB had it listed as the No. 2 song. Second of all, FTWIIs rhymes with Poop. And tird, I never said Squirm was bad, but it will never be BTCS, it's on GRUX. If anything, LITHOG and Squirm should have been the basis for the rest of the album, I think that would have been cool to have heard an album made around those 2 dard songs. Oh, I almost forgot, "Funny the way shit is", and yes, it sure is. Uggh. can I go now?

Re: Rank the Big Whiskey Songs

    1. Squirm (love the strings)
    2. Grux/Shake Me Like A Monkey (love the horns)
    3. Seven (love the horns in the background and chorus sticks in your head)
    4. Aligator Pie (lyrics are ok. I just keep hearing a lap-guitar in my head when I listen to this, so it rocks out harder in my mind)
    5. Lying in the Hands of God (love Timmy in this)
    6. Time Bomb (I appreciate the yelling at the end, but without seeing Dave actually doing it...it doesnt quite hit home for me)
    7. Why I Am (just catchy and great Roi images in my head)
    8. Baby Blue (just a pretty song)
    9. Funny The Way It Is (poppy no doubt, but i get "if you think about it" stuck in my head a lot)
10.Dive In (pretty song. for me, I have to be in a somber mood to really get into it though)
11.You and Me (this is actually a good song. Wondefful verses and pre-choruses. I like it. I would have ranked it higher, but I sort of feel like the lyrics in the chorus were something last minute and done for the sake of finishing the song. maybe Dave wanted it to be just a sweet, simple song)
12.Spaceman (i like it, but it doesn't really grab me. The whole song kind of coasts along for me. If I rarely heard this song I wouldn't long for it. I'd probably just miss Carter on drums.)

In all reality every track besides Baby Blue and You and Me could be #1 at any time. However, live, Time Bomb is turning into a complete monster.
