If your car calls for premium and you use premium, you will likely see an increase in performance and mileage.

Eh. You just get what you are suppose to.

If you car call for premium and you use premium and get 30mpg, that isn't really an "increase" from if you use regular and only get 28.5 mpg. If that makes any sense lol

For those that don't get mid grade... It is a diminishing returns type of thing. My engine needs slower burning gas than regular, but not the slowest(premium).

Don't own a car. Live downtown and walk to work. Take the train anywhere else I need to go (i.e. airport, suburbs to visit parents, other friends places, golf, etc.)

Rent a zipcar on occasion to get to hockey. Have yet to need to put gas in one of those, though.

Right, that's what I meant. If your manual calls for premium, I think most people would say that, these days, it's fine to use regular, you just lose a bit of performance.

But if you've been using regular in an engine that calls for premium, you'll definitely see a mileage increase if you use the premium.

if your car calls for premium gasoline, you will see optimal engine performance by using it, but not an increase in gas mileage. i'm not sure how else to put it, pretty simple

A lot of people don't use premium, even if their car calls for it. I'm saying that if they would, they'd see an increase in mileage from what they're getting by using regular.

People buy nice cars that are designed to use premium fuel but aren't willing to pay ~$8(@ 40c more than regular, 18.5g tank) more per tank so that it runs right. Dumb. Its is even less when you use discounts from grocery stores/gift cards/credit cards/cash, ect.

See above. I was referencing as opposed to using regular.

but how much of a difference in mileage? to really be worth it, the mileage increase would have to be more over the total tank than the mileage you would get with the amount of gas you could buy with the difference between regular and premium.

for sake of easy numbers, lets say regular is $3.00 and premium is $3.50 with a 10 gallon tank. so thats $30 to fill on regular and $35 to fill on premium. $5 worth of regular is 1.66 gallons. if you get 30mpg on regular, thats an extra 50 miles on that $5. so $35 worth of regular would get you 350 miles. you would have to get at least 35mpg on premium to make the increase in mileage actually benefit you. if the car doesn't actually run noticeably better using the higher grade and does fine with regular, there really isnt a reason to get premium.

If your car is "premium recommended", thats different than "premium required"

And even if your car is premium recommended, only on the newer technology cars should you be okay with running an unleaded fuel. The newer engines can adjust the levels on the fly- not so much on the older cars.
Also if your car is turbo-ed, definitely stick with the higher octane fuel.

But overall if the price difference hits your wallet that much, you shouldnt be buying a car that recommends premium in the first place then.

This is the correct answer, higher end cars typically have engines with higher compression ratios there for 87 octane gas will ignite before the piston reaches top dead center(still on the way up) which is known as Detonation, when this happens it creates a distinct knocking noise. Absolutely no boost in performance for the average car going with higher octane
