that's because people overseas haven't had the opportunity to see DMB in ages now. venue sizes and number of shows have decreased for DMB in the US drastically. this isn't a coincidence to their current state. it's a reflection of it.
this year, it hit me that if they don't change anything up next year, i can't see myself spending the $90 to see a band that accepts mediocrity in their shows. and being completely honest, i never thought i'd see the day. i still wish they'd go back to the Caravans. those were easily some of my favorite shows and formats. they catered to everyone.
the only reason Phish is being brought up here is because these are two bands that came to the scene around the same time and who are trending in very opposite directions. many people are fans of both, and this is just a discussion. there's no doubt that DMB knows exactly what they're doing in terms of creativity. there's a reason they didn't announce this year as one acoustic and one electric set. they just called it "2 sets", so they could sell more tickets and create the idea that this would be somehow different than last year. and it wasn't.
i was honestly more entertained watching Phish webcasts this year than going to the sole DMB show i went to. i understand that some people might not be interested in it, but this isn't hiding the fact that the two bands are indeed polar opposites of each other right now. Phish continues to push their limits and see what they can achieve show by show, and DMB doesn't care about show format or when they'll even release their next album. very uninspiring.
