Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

I'm having a really hard time trying to decide whether to buy this or Battlefield 3 (only want to get one).

Map packs are most likely going to be $15 a piece as they've been since COD4. The bigger change is that they're going to be releasing alot more than just map packs this time around, from what I've heard being a monthly release.

You'd have to decide if the extras past the map packs are worth it and if you'd get them anyways. You'll save $10-25 in the long run if you only buy map packs (assuming they release a total of 4-5 map packs).

If you plan on getting the other stuff you may as well get the Elite.

It seems that those that like BF2 frown on MW2, and vice versa.

I was really into MW2 and tried BF at that time, and I didnt like BF2. I didnt like the dynamics of it.

Im going to give BF3 a chance, but Im not buying it before trying it it. Ill definately be getting MW3 day of, no matter what.

Anyone know of a website or something that lists the different pre-order perks you can get depending on what store you order it from?

Amazon's kinda suck, and that's where I usually pre-order stuff from. Curious what else is out there.

Interesting analysis. I've owned every COD game so far, and never played any of the Battlefields, but the early looks at the campaign had me seriously considering the switch. That said, I know what I'll be getting in MW3, so that'll probably be the way I end up going.

Yes. Free release date shipping. And if you get it a day late or something I've heard of them refunding the entire purchase so the game ends up free. Not sure what the actual policy is though.

    Amazon is seriously the best.

The PC reviews of BF3 so far have said the campaign is seriously lacking, and is incredibly generic.

That's interesting. The reason most people choose Battlefield games is because of the massive maps, which allows for lots of vehicles and a lot of different dynamics interacting.

There was a map in Battlefield 2 that would literally take you a good 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other (good 5 minutes or so using one of the cars). However, you have to remember the maps were made for 64 players. What that does is allow several "mini battles" to be going on all over the place. You can choose where and how you want to fight (be sneaky, be aggressive, play defense, fly a jet, fly a chopper, use a tank, etc.). With such huge maps, it's definitely a team-based game. You need people to work together to be really effective (or hope the other team doesn't know how to work together) by having squads that work as units and a good mix of people playing different kits.

So yeah, it's definitely different, but the "sandbox" feel to the battlefield series is what draws most of its fans. Also, the beta was truly a beta, not a demo in case anyone was confused. They released it specifically to fix bugs and stress test servers, not to really to demonstrate the game at all. The demo was also a 6 week old version of the game because it took that long for the console makers to approve it from the time EA submitted it. So the final version will have a fair amount of changes.

Amazon didn't ship my NHL game by release date. They essentially gave me store credit for the full amount of the game.

I don't doubt that, but to be honest nobody buys Battlefield games for the single player. It's all about the multiplayer. I mean Battlefield 2 didn't even have a single player mode (well they did, but it was just the multiplayer maps against bots). The single player campaign in Battlefield games is more like a bonus rather than a reason to buy the game.

Map packs are 15 dollars each, with 4 expected, so Elite is 20 dollars cheaper. Not only that, but with Elite, maps are disbursed before the map pack for everyone else. So the game's coming out November 8th, let's say the first map pack is planned for January 15th. On January 15th, the map pack releases with 4 multiplayer maps and one new single-player campaign mission. But if you have elite, you're going to get map #1 on November 20th, map #2 on December 3rd, and so on. Those dates aren't exact, but the gist of the matter is Elite gets you everything earlier, and cheaper.

Also, they haven't officially confirmed if everything in Elite will be available for purchase a la carte. We know the multiplayer maps will be available in map packs, but we don't know for sure if that includes the single-player expansion stuff. That might just be for Elite.

And that would be fine, but unfortunately EA and DICE have been setting their own goalposts. Their advertising has been based on "we're better than CoD in every way", and focused heavily on the single-player in early demos.

If they had treated this like BF2 or BFBC1/2, where they have a sorta interesting single player and classic multiplayer, that's one thing. But they went out of their way to promote single player as something that rivals multiplayer, and early reviews have it being boring at best.

So if their advertisements hadn't been promoting the single player, then it would be a better game than it is now?
Reviews are hugely dependent on goalposts, and that's what we were discussing, the early reviews. Your post I quoted was in a response to discussion about reviews. Reviews are the subject here.

So if they had promoted it as the newest iteration of the BF series, and not as "the definitive CoD killer", with the tagline "Go Above and Beyond the Call", set to Jay-Z's "99 Problems", then yes, absolutely, without a doubt, reviews of the single-player would've been a bit less harsh. Same game, but more favorable single player reviews. Because if we set the goalposts at "well, Battlefield has always been terrible at campaigns, and this is just another BF game," then your reaction to a boring, but not outright bad campaign is better than when you were promised a CoD killer.

Brendan does that mean you still have to pay for map packs if you get elite?

No. For 40 dollars, you get everything, earlier than people who wait to pay more for content later. Elite's an awesome value.

I guess I was just talking about what makes Battlefield 3 a battlefield game compared to a COD game. I even said the single player probably isn't the best ever in BF3. I personally don't care about the review scores at all for either game.

My point was basically if you buy BF3 because of the single player campaign, you probably bought it for the wrong reason. EA can advertise it however they want, but Battlefield has always been known for its multiplayer. Most people know that. The ones that don't may buy it for the single player, but they will keep playing it because of the multiplayer.
