Moving Back In With Your Parents

I'm seriously consdiering this as an option. I got a promotion on Friday, and I have to move to Cincy. I do not see myself staying in this job very long, so I really don't want to get tied down to a lease nor do I want to buy a home. My parents offered me a place to live for basically nothing. Any advice?

Depends on how old you are...are you married? Dating? Have kids? Is it temporary? What are you future plans?

if you only plan to work there for a few months, and not stick around Cincy afterwards, it wouldnt be a terrible idea.

I'm 25 with a serious girlfriend, who has one year of college left. I own a small house now. It should go on the market at about 120k, which is well above what I paid for it. I basically plan on using this job as a springboard to a job back in Pittsburgh that wouldn't involve sales. If I find I really like this job in Cincy, I could always buy a home down there.

I wish I could move back in with my parents. You could offer them some money for rent or help out in other ways and it would still be serious bank. If you honestly save your money while you are there, it's a really good idea.

I just recently moved back home. Its not a bad thing, its not always great but I'm adjusting to not being in my own place anymore. I've definitely been eating a lot better since making the move, and my mom insists on doing my laundry so I have no complaints about that.

What does your gf think of the whole thing? Would visits be a mission with you staying with your folks? What if you stay in Cincy - is she open to the area after graduation?

I've done sales since I graduated college, and I'm just sick of it. I'm going to be in charge of sales for the whole company, so my travel is going to go way up. It's not something I'm looking forward to, but it looks really good on a resume.

I just don't really like the sales thing despite the fact that I'm really good at it. I have a different persona for everyone of my accounts to make them happy.

I live in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, but I'm in Ohio. If you get into PA it's a lot more expensive

She's not real happy. I'm going to back around Pittsburgh alot because all the accounts I built for myself are there, so I'll probably see her as much as I do now. We both want to live in Pittsburgh, and she doesn't seem real open to change.

If you only keep the job for a few months, it probably won't look great on the resume. You'd probably have to keep it for 9 months to 1 year to really show you established yourself there, got things accomplished, etc.

I figured on keeping it for a year.

Then this is how I'd look at it:

Here are the costs that would change:

    Avg Mortgage (120k house)/Rent: $1000k
    Utilities: $150
    Food: $200

    Total: $1350
    $1350 * 12 = $16,200

I assume since you are in sales you have a company car and get mileage reimbursements, etc, so that won't change.

Now I'm not sure of your particular situation, if you'll have to pay your parents for anything, but I can tell you that you'll probably spend a little more money on "miscellaneous" stuff living at home than you did on your own. By that I mean you'll go out to eat a little more, blow a little more at the bars, etc, just to get out of the monotony of living at home. So I'm gonna give you $3,200 for that, approximately $280/month.

That leaves you with $13k extra after a year.

To me, the answer is easy.

I did it when I was 23 for a year. It worked fine for me. Saved a lot of money!

Re: Moving Back In With Your Parents

I live with my parent's right now, they built a new house with an unfinished basement and I basically troll around downstairs where they don't go anyways. I have a bedroom and a bathroom and a stairway down from the garage so I can come and go as I please, I just go upstairs for food in the evenings. (Mom does do my laundry, which is a nice bonus). I wanted to be able to save some money to pay off some school loans and other various debt. I feel shitty doing it but I'll never get ahead if I don't do it while I have the chance (Single, no kids and parents who actually let me move back temporarily).

Some of my siblings have done it. I have not. I never want to.

I have been out on my own since I was 20. (However, I was with a friend since I was 18, but I don't think that counts.)

So, I haven't lived with my folks in almost 9 years. I actually hardly ever see them anymore. Probably I've seen them on and off for 5 months total in the whole aforementioned nearly 9 years. Haven't seen my Ma or one of my sisters in almost 4.

Hey, things just turned out that way.

Hell, my Ma suggested I move up here (nearly 5 hours away). Besides, I have extended family here, too. And friends. So, I'm cool.

It just depends on your lifestyle, or the lifestyle you like to have, versus the way your parents live, and what you're all willing to compromise. so it's different with everyone, especially if you have younger siblings still living at home. It can work out for a lot of people. Personally, I hope I never have a reason to need to go back, I just really enjoy my independence and privacy here. So does my mom, who is retiring this year as well as getting her first grandchild. She's ready for her "golden years"

A year ago I would have said live with your parents as long as you can and just save money, but I really believe it's best to get out there and become independent as soon as you can. You're going to have to be eventually.

As long as you don't sponge off of them, and treat them with respect, it would be fine for a short time.
