Re: how much is too much? (pet surgery)

I can't believe there are so many people saying that a $5k bill is to be expected when you buy a dog. Again, i'm not saying you don't have an obligation to your dog when you buy it, just playing the other side.

I also am a little confused as to why the fact so many people choose to put their dogs down yet hasn't come up. That's probably more realistic today than someone footing 5k for whatever reason.

Well then, you really don't understand how the rest of the world works. Most people have a finite amount of resources. If a person has 5k in the bank and their dogs surgery cost 10k, that's a financial condition they can't meet. Nor should they be pressured to go into debt for an animal IMO. Do you believe only the rich should have pets?

I am with you.. 5k on an animal with a 12 year life expectancy to begin with is crazy.

Comparing anything about owning a dog to having kids is far and away the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

    so i'm confused.

    kill dogs? don't kill dogs?

    dog = babies?

I say it's my dog so who gives a fuck? If the vet didn't want him dead he wouldn't charge 5k.

I love my dogs, and my daughter does too, but I'm not paying 3k or more for a dog. I'll put the dog down, buy a new dog, and my daughter will be fine.

That's a somewhat twisted definition of love. Not necessarily the unwillingness to spend the money, but the "fuck it, I'll just buy a new one like it's a curtain rod" attitude.

Yeah, but it's a beagle. I've considered hiring a professional to off my neighbors loud-ass-never-stops-barking-stupid-fucking beagle.

I could go on for paragraphs, but to sum up....he constantly gets into our trash, shits and pisses all over the house (out of spite, not necessity), gets into our pantry and eats our food. Barks non-stop (literally) if we try to crate him at night. I could go on.

He's twelve years old and I can't find him another home. I can't bring myself to take him to the shelter because they would just kill him. I don't want him dead, I just want to find him another home.

damn, thats a tricky situation because not many people are going to want to adopt a dog that old. : i don't even know what i would do in this situation.

I know you've had trashcan issues in the past, but perhaps you need a new trashcan, one with a locking lid. And do you not have a door on your pantry?

If a dog is sick/old, by all means, put it down.

If it's sick because you left a toy out that it ate, I don't really support the killing of an animal because you don't have the ability to take care of it properly. Pay to get her healthy, after all YOU (not you, whoever's dog it is) cause this, than do the dog one favor, and find it a new home.

He can unlock the trash can. The only way to keep him out of it is to put it up on our counter. And yeah, our pantry has a door but if someone forgets to shut it completely then he's in there faster than a cock in Katie's mouth on a first date.

How a bout a taller/heavy one? Tall because he's short, and heavy so he won't knock it over.

Or do you need it low for the kids?

We have a tall heavy one, with a lock. He still manages to get it open.

    edit: I guess it's not technically a lock, but it's a clasp.

We paid about 2,000. dollars to remove the spleen of our aussie because of Hemangiosarcoma. It's a very aggressive cancer and there was no hope it would cure him, only that he would be fine for a few months at most.
After surgery he recovered very quickly and was like a new dog for almost 4 months. He crashed very quickly a couple of days before Christmas (2010) and we had to put him down.
There was never any doubt that we wouldn't do it, and as sad it was knowing he wasn't going to be around much longer, you cherished everyday and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
